At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

Morgan Freeman plays a well-known actor, who hasn't accepted a role in four years, that is considering a film project. The cousin of the director drives him to Archie's Ranch Market, and drops him off to do a little research. He's fascinated by one of the checkers, Scarlet played by the gorgeous Paz Vega, a young woman from Spain with a preternatural ability to ring up items at the cash register at the 10 Items Or Less lane. The actor chats her up, and when her shift ends, he asks for a ride. Thus begins the movie,10 Items Or Less - a modern day Two For The Road minus the love story. In the course of the movie, he helps her prepare for a job interview. He teaches her to have self-confidence and in the process,he learns to commit from her. The themes of human connection and communication is explored in the story. The film is great as both Freeman and Vega were honest in their portrayal and have shown great chemistry together.Freeman is as usual always good while Vega needs to improve on her delivery of lines as she evokes less emotion due to her difficulty in speaking English.Overall, the communication and exchange of ideas between two characters - the actor and Scarlet - is practically the whole movie.Although many may find this film boring,I still would enjoy these types of films that provides people a view on how two people of different background can help instill change on one another. A 10 and not less should definitely be the rating of this film.

I have seen '10 items or less' before, but I watched again today as it was my birthday. I wanted to see the kind of movie I appreciate the most: emotionally touching, life-affirming and dealing with human relationships. '10 items or less' never disappointed me in this respect. It doesn't have much of a plot; it doesn't need it. It's the human contact that makes the film special. I loved all the little silly and funny things Morgan did when meeting other people, and the way he picked up Scarlet. She was lucky to meet him as he decided to help her gain a new perspective on her life. Morgan encouraged her to go to an interview for a job she dreamed of and supported her all he could. Scarlet was able to talk about her concerns with a real actor who knew that life was about playing roles. Pick a role you like and have courage to play it. I was pleased to see Morgan take joy in the human interaction. The film can certainly make you get a more relaxed approach to life and give you ideas how to make it more interesting and enjoyable.

I didn't know what Brad Silberling's '10 Items or Less'. I thought his 'City of Angels' was terrific and given that '10 Items or Less' had the unusual pairing of Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega, I was curious. Now after seeing this delightful little picture, I can say it's definitely worth watching. The story is about the randomness in life and how it can lead to something precious as is depicted through the random encounter of a famous actor and a supermarket cashier. The relationship between the two is beautifully portrayed through simple interactions. The one thing they have in common is that both these people are fed up with the current state of their lives and they want something better. While they plan on moving forward, as the actor attempts to make a comeback and the cashier goes to her interview, they are pessimistic and uncertain, questioning whether there's any point at all in taking a step forward if the result is going to be the same.I'm glad to finally see Morgan Freeman in a proper lead role. His actor is funny, charming, friendly, likable and smart. He more than proves that he can carry a lead role. Paz Vega wonderfully matches wits with Freeman as she holds her own. Cameos by Annie Dudek, Bobby Canavale and Jim Parsons are hilarious.'10 Items or Less' is another example of how less is more. The clever writing boasts of humour and satire. The running time is less than the standard 90 minutes. It has a very simple look to it and is made on a modest budget. Coupled with this are the writing, performances and direction that make '10 Items or Less' a movie treat.

'10 Items or Less' is an interesting drama that tries a bit too hard to be quirky. The comedic elements are weak and the film would have worked much better as a straight drama. Morgan Freeman has fun with his role as an actor who meets a struggling grocery clerk (Paz Vega) while trying to prepare for a role. The plot is predictable with some obvious life lessons being learned. Yet the two actors play well off each other. Some of the lines come across as a bit too cute and the film feels slightly padded. Still it's watchable specially at home on television or DVD.Overall 6/10
