It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

The tone comes from "Kramer vs. Kramer" (marital disintegration, child used as a weapon), with extractions from "Doc Hollywood" (the attachment to the setting). There's no disguising this as anything other than Vaughn's star vehicle...that said, he accomplishes the job. Part of the reason these movies exist is for producers to figure out if they've got a leading man with presence and appeal -- here, they do.What they got right: the center of this is the father-son dynamic, not the common date movie. Oh, it has all the requisite date movie parts: a romance is established, something drives the couple apart, they are reconciled at the end and we cheer -- but this movie is smart because the adornments of the romance are subservient to the center, not the other way around. There is no offensive melodrama. What they could have improved: cinematically, there could have been more elements of interest. Kansas is a scenic place, as I know from my own travels there. The most interesting element here is the house, a fine example of a Folk Victorian, circa 1910. At the finale, there was a huge opportunity to use the landscape and apply a visual reinforcement to the narrative (coming home) -- disappointingly, it never came to pass -- not even one sunflower to admire.

vince vaughn does a great great job of acting in this; especially since he doesn't usually play a serious part.i was very impressed by the story line and reality of this movie, and would recommend it to everyone.i think joey lauren adams and monica potter do excellent jobs as well. i saw it this Sunday on TV, when i was flipping channels, and i ended up watching the entire movie, and hating the commercials in between. it was so realistic and so much what life is really like for couples and when you have a child- i really got into it. i even called my mom and sis and told them to watch it.a cool dry place is an excellent movie, and i am going to try and buy it soon!

Here is a film that handles the crossing of roads you have started and roads yet to be taken with grace.Vince Vaughn makes the part all it could be and more. One of the best fathers I have seen in film. The writing is superb and the pace will pay off on this buried jewel.Cool, Dry Place should have succeeded Big Daddy in the box office, if Fox trusted its audience of struggling adults in a world of change. One of the best small movies out there.

A Cool Dry Place is yet another film that helps make the point about small independent movies being better than most studio films. I try to pick out unknown movies with known stars. That's how I came upon A Cool Dry Place. Vince Vaughn stars as a single dad trying to adjust to life in a small town after years of being a married, working city man. Vince is torn between the characters played by Joey Lauren Adams, and Monica Potter. Adams is much more tolerable in this movie than she is in most of her other films I have seen. I think its because her character has more of an edge, and isn't always trying to be a sweetheart like her characters in other movies are. I don't really care for Monica Potter. I would say she gets the job done, but nothing more. The actor playing Vaughn's son is wonderful because he's not as annoying as most child actors are.I admit that this movie is kind of slow, and struggles to keep your attention for about ninety minutes. If you make it that far, the climax to the movie is magnificent, and leaves the audience with a wonderful feeling as the credits roll.
