This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

When I first selected this film on the Encore package I knew it would be a good one because John Travolta has emerged as one of the great actors of our time. He has come a long way since his dancing days in 'Saturday Night Fevor.' I was not disappointed, as the entire cast was outstanding and the screenplay writer put up one out of the south as it is today. The music was terrific and, although the film may be slow to some, why don't you watch a movie with an aging Bruce Willis or Sylvestor Stallone trying to act like a stud? Clint Estwood as least acts his age, ex's: 'Heartbreak Ridge' and 'Gran Torino.' Travolta was made up to look older; no problem, I am 71 and I don't care if people think I'm old.At first, I thought the film was set in Mississippi, the 'fattest' state in the USA. Let me reiterate, I have been to every state and most countries and no people are kinder than Missippippi's or Louisiananites. If fat people are jolly and caring, I'd like to live there in a New York minute. The food is great! Is the 'Cock of the Walk' restaurant near Jackson still operating? That was a great experience; also, riding on 'Desire' and sitting in the back of the bus in Jackson, a white guy in a grey flannel suit.

This film captures perfectly the subculture in New Orleans that revolves around the neighborhood bar scene. I grew up around this culture and have seen and have known characters exactly like those in the movie. The city of New Orleans still attracts lost souls like those depicted in the story . Intelligent , well educated people , with substance abuse problems , trying to escape a painful past , like Bobby Long . People with no direction , who are just searching for a purpose in life , and don't care if they ever find it , like Lawson . And mixed-up young people trying to make sense of their lives , like Pursy. Great characters . I watched it again just now on IFC.

I liked this film, but one thing I can't figure out is why the characters of Travolta and Macht gave no signs of being a couple. The explanation given for the fact that the teacher and student spent nine years living together is that the student, Macht, felt guilty about the death of the teacher's son. That and the fact that he had promised to write Bobby Long's (Travolta) biography. That's just not credible enough a motive for spending so much time together in poverty and booze.By any standards of plausibility, there should at least have been the insinuation of an amorous past between the two. Otherwise it just looks odd.

This was made for Travolta and Johansson. Even the shots inside the house were beautiful. The critics didn't like this movie. I guess they don't know about real life anymore. Bobby made a statement as to that " I know God and God knows me " this has interested me to no end. I put it in Google as he said it and surprisingly enough, it comes from the Good Sheppard parable John 10-15. Does this mean bobby fancies himself as the God Shepard or what? He is quite sanctimonious you know. Mr Macht is great also. The bar scenes are too. Bobby's story about his 10 year old experiences were true enough to be scary. It was real enough to be known by me and my ilk.
