Brilliant and touching

It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

This movie is from 2011 and had a special "fairy-tale" quality like I remember from "The Princess Bride". Jules as the main character really made this movie. She had an unusual beauty. What a surprise to see an 84 year old Roger Moore (the movie would have been a 10 if they got him to dance with Jules). I didn't realize he was in the movie and kept thinking "is that him". They did add a 007 reference which was appropriate. The earlier dance scene was really fun starting with a waltz and ending with an electric guitar. A great moment when the young prince and his nephew were shooting arrows. Roger Moore's character was not that good. His scenes tended to be dull but it was him and his presence added to the magic of the story. It is worth the watch.

I liked this movie the first time I saw it...and increasingly when I saw the repeats. It just has a nice, enchanting story that flowed. It stayed focused on a Christmas theme and atmosphere...with Christmas settings...while melding nicely with the primary plot......."Edward" and "Ashton" were elegant and charming, respectively...a delightful change of persona from "over-bearing, macho" actors......I liked "Jules" part with her humbleness, sincerity and sense of responsibility...while having a fun side. But I think a slightly more beautiful actress should have played the part. Her teeth were really detracting as they dominated her face when she spoke or smiled...and why did her hair look oily?? But she was still likable, and played the part very well.....Of course the wardrobe person had very, very poor taste with that gown....The supporting caste was good...The only one that was annoying occasionally was "Miles" with his over-played rotten teenage attitude.....The script and the directing was good also. The entire movie was put together and presented very well...very, very enjoyable...time and time again.

Truth be told, Christmas movies are by their nature disposable. Producers and financial backers love them. You produce them on a shoestring and the year-end demand usually provides more than enough momentum to knock you into profit straight away. If the movie actually proves to be high quality and finds an audience, well, that truly would be a XMas miracle.. wouldn't it? No miracle here. The highly photogenic Katie McGrath (who did such great work in Merlin, playing the same role in both Light and Dark hues) does a passable American accent but is otherwise lost in a script so weak you wonder how how the paper made through the printer without jamming. Not a strong performance anywhere, and Roger Moore, a man who treated an entire generation to his Ivanhoe, and yet another generation to his Saint, looks lost.Truly this makes Amanda's Bines 2003 WHAT A GIRL WANTS (actually a very entertaining film) look like Oscar material.

Watched this having heard that Sam Heughan had been picked to play Jamie Fraser. Spurred on by the fact Katie McGrath was also in this (loved her in Merlin!) Really enjoyed this easy to watch Christmas film, Sam was definitely the best thing in it! Although the children put in good performances too. I won't go into the story too much, but one of my favourite scenes has to be the dance lesson and their initial first meeting. My only down point (and the reason I gave 9 instead of 10) was Katies's accent which did waiver a little through out the film. Should have just stayed with her natural accent. My 5 year old also sat with me and also enjoyed it, and wanted to marry the prince at the end of the film :-)
