If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.

The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.

Edward Carnby, detective of the paranormal, investigates a mystery with clues leading to "Shadow Island" that brings him face to face with bizarre horrors that prove both psychologically disturbing and lethal, as he discovers that evil demons worshiped by an ancient culture called the Abskani. Alone in the Dark is another horrible looking and also packed with horrible perfomances Uwe Boll flick that has some big names in it who although some of them quite talented couldn't even handle the word 'I am' without screwing it. Definitely an awful flick. (0/10)

Every movie is someone's favorite movie. That's why I don't call these reviews. They're me exploring films, trying to figure out how they happened and what they are about. How do I do that about this film without feeling like I'm kicking a limbless child?Edward Carnby (Christian Slater, Heathers) is an occult detective and the star of the video games that you may or may not have played. As a child, he was subject to some intense experiments as he grew up in an orphanage where Sister Clara raised him. As a result, he has a sixth sense and has increased strength and agility. He also used to work for Bureau 713, which protects the world from the paranormal. We learn about Bureau 713 from a long scroll in the beginning that is also read to us. It goes on way longer than it needs to. And then it goes on some more. It may still be running as you read this. He's also investigating the disappearance of the Abkani, who worshipped demons from another dimension, demons who are coming back to ours. His girlfriend Aline (Tara Reid, American Pie) is the curator of a museum which happens to have artifacts from the Abkani. There are also some paramilitary guys who are legitimately wearing paintball armor led by Commander Burke (Stephen Dorff, Blade). The writer of the film, Blair Erickson, summed up the changes Uwe Boll made to the script: "Thankfully Dr. Boll was able to hire his loyal team of hacks to crank out something much better than our crappy story and add in all sorts of terrifying horror movie essentials like opening gateways to alternate dimensions, bimbo blonde archaeologists, sex scenes, mad scientists, slimy dog monsters, special army forces designed to battle slimy CG dog monsters, Tara Reid, Matrix slow-motion gun battles, and car chases. Oh yeah, and a ten-minute opening backstory scroll read aloud to the illiterate audience, the only people able to successfully miss all the negative reviews. I mean hell, Boll knows that's where the real scares lie." Yes, the bad guys look like aliens and basically tear everyone to pieces, other than Slater and Reid. That is -- if you get that far. This is a film packed with continuity gaffes, appearances by camera people and even Reid being unable to say the word Newfoundland. For a film set in California, Canadian signage appears throughout. When Agent Cheung's dead body is found, she visibly moves before the scene ends. And perhaps most amazingly, the creatures in the film? Their main weakness is light. Yet they show up in broad daylight to attack the two main characters at the end of the film.I know Uwe Boll likes to punch critics, but I can handle it. Seriously, if you love a video game, there's the worry that this man has made a movie of it. I'd do an entire week of his films on this site, but I don't even know if I have that kind of guts.

You will invariably come across films where the only plausible response is, "why?". As in, why bother making it at all? You can rarely pin it on one person, and those who do are missing the bigger picture. Regardless, Alone In The Dark did not need to be made. This film should never have been released. You watch it. Things happen, with only the most tenuous connection making a plot out of the story. This aspect of the film is so bad that, without the introductory dialog, there would be zero hope of the viewer understanding why these things were happening. So, the core of any successful film is, in my opinion, the story and the plot; there is a story here, but it's ridiculous. There is a plot, but it's too loose to do its job.You watch it. You see Christian Slater overacting, stiff and lifeless. You see Brad Doriff, miscast and unnecessary. You see Tara Reid. And seeing Tara Reid is fine in my book, but when she starts talking, the magic is lost. You see bad acting everywhere, bad casting and ridiculous dialog, poor execution and performance all around. You watch it. The actual fear from a horror movie is nonexistent; I challenge anyone to describe what truly scared them about this film. The entities that are meant to scare you are nearly void of purpose, poorly designed, digitally executed in a shoddy, video game-esque manner that detracts from the live action film you're watching, and, more than anything, are not scary in and of themselves.Nothing about this film is scary. Nothing about this film is redeemable. For their budget, they could have filmed somebody playing the classic PC game it is "based on" (in quotes because, beyond the lead character's name, there is nothing in this movie that relates to that game) for two hours and made a more enjoyable film. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Another smudge on Uwe Boll's credibility, but not even close to being completely his fault.

The Plot Holes In Alone In The Dark1. In the beginning of the film, Carnby repeatedly claims "I am here to protect you from the things you don't believe in." Yet he continually imperils the lives of the taxi driver, other motorists and bystanders in an open market. He also assaults a police officer and steals his weapon, which constitutes a felony. (Atypical behavior of character)2. Bystanders were witness to a car chase and ongoing assaults in broad daylight, in an open market. At this point the authorities should have been alerted, and should have intervened in the process. Despite this, Carnby was able to walk away scot-free. Even a day later he is sitting outside waiting for Fischer, yet no one seems to liken Carnby to a wanted man in broad daylight. (Logic error)3. Near the beginning, it was never stated how Dr. Hudgens was able to acquire information on Carnby's exact whereabouts while situated out on an unknown open ocean. (No explanation; randomness)4. Before carnage ensued onboard the ship, Hudgens was thrown into a compartment and the door sealed. During the carnage, he barricades the door, preventing it from being opened again. After the carnage, he throws the rod off the door which swings open, even though it was clearly sealed shut. (In fact by barricading the door, he would have compromised his only chance of escaping.) (Impossible; inconsistencies)5. Aline Cedrac clearly vented her annoyance at Edward Carnby for not being honest with her in the past, yet she made out with him as if all was forgotten, only for the two to get back to business as if nothing happened. (Atypical behavior of character; randomness; pointless action)6. Bureau 713 should not have been able to retrieve Pinkerton's body from the market place without attracting attention. If the authorities did eventually make it to the scene of the crime, they would have impeded on the intervention of an unknown establishment. (In fact, there was no vivid explanation as to whether Bureau 713 was governmental or private.)(Impossibility; logic error)7. It is revealed that Pinkerton was experimented upon just like the orphans, giving him the supposed invincibility. Yet while he is impregnable against any weapon including lead firearms, the orphans fall foul of every weapon, including the very type of ammunition meant to decapitate the Xenos and not humans. (Fischer already told Carnby that the paraphernalia was effective against the xenos, and never mentioned whether if it was effective against the infected humans.) Furthermore, it was revealed that Pinkerton was 'killed' because a metal spike cleaved through his spinal cord and killed the parasite attached to it. Yet the orphans were easily killed even though there was no visible destruction of the same parasites fused to their spinal cords. (Inconsistencies; missing information)8. Even if Carnby managed to successfully pilfer Burke's access card, it should not have given him easy access into Bureau 713 as he is no longer part of the establishment and every personnel must possess an authentic photographic ID card. (Logic error)9. Given that the monsters underground had not ventured out of the dark world minutes after the gateway was opened, Burke should have given himself ample time (more than mere five seconds!) to detonate the device and escape, without shooting at the monsters and aggravating them in the process. (Atypical behavior of character; pointless action)10. When Carnby and Cedrac return to the orphanage, they find Sister Clara's body lying on the floor. But the orphanage is empty, so why was it left behind and not carried away for health and safety? Also even before the evacuation, the orphans present around her would have stopped her from committing suicide. (Logic error; no valid explanation)11. It is unthinkable to an average person that an entire city could possibly be evacuated in less than one night; and even if the city was attacked by the unexplained monsters, there should have been traces of blood and debris in the vicinity as there always were in previous scenes of rampage. (logic error; inconsistencies)
