Sam, a soldier who had served in Afghanistan and Iraq, meets Amira when he visits her uncle, Bassam, who had served as Sam's Iraqi translator. Bassam and Sam have a special bond due to their time together in the war. Initially Amira does not trust him because he was an American soldier and her brother was killed by a bomb from American troops in the war. Sam's cousin, Charlie, asks Sam to help him with illegal hedge funds unbeknownst to Sam at the time. Amira is staying with her uncle Bassam since her father died. She sells bootlegged films on the street corner but is forced to stay with Sam after getting busted; immigration officials begin pursuing her. As the film progresses, Sam and Amira fall in love.

UnowPriceless hyped garbage
Supelice Dreadfully Boring
Huievest Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Reno Rangan It looks good, but not very enjoyable. I would have liked if it was focused only on Sam about a soldier's struggle since his return from the war like the 2009 film 'The Messenger' perhaps. The Amira's character seems deliberately put in, especially in the present western world scenario to tell what's wrong with them. So sorry, this did not click for me. But I like some parts, like how the character Amira transformed compared to the beginning and ending.Martin Starr was at his best and that's why its watchable. Some people might like the film for its simpleness, but the screenplay should have been improved. They covered many topics like wall street, unemployed ex soldier, immigrant et cetera in 90 minutes, but when it comes to the romance part, the reality was missing. So like I said, intentionally the lead two characters put together to bring attention, rather to tell a neat romantic tale.It it like 'Learning to Drive' kind of film. That aimed to reveal the cultural clash between two and how it stands as an obstacle between their feeling to each other. This is not for everybody, even the middle eastern audience might be annoyed about how Amira was portrayed in a few scenes. But those are the parts I liked the most from it. Just once watchable.4/10
Seth_Rogue_One A nice surprise about 2 very different characters one an ex-army American soldier man and one Muslim refugee woman. With that set-up this could have turned out to be just any typical rom-com fare but it avoids doing that by keeping a great sense of realism throughout the movie with characters and developments that all seem natural. As a big 'Freaks and Geeks' fan from my youth it's nice to see yet another Apatow 'family member' get his shot at the limelight, in this case Martin Starr who played the lovable geek with massive glasses; Bill Haverchuck in the series. And he handles the lead-role splendidly with natural charisma as does his love interest in the movie Dina Shihabi as Amira. All in all a small independent drama-comedy that succeeds at being funny and dramatic when it's supposed to be, a slice of life type of movie.
scott-grisanti Ideally paced & tight, Amira & Sam combines a genuinely funny & touching script with pitch perfect timing & chemistry across a great cast, especially Dina Shihabi (Amira), Martin Starr (Sam), & Laith Nakli (Bassam). While the dialog keeps you laughing, the story line reminds us of the very real downstream impact & human cost of long-term military action on those who serve & the local population. The movie also serves as a great showcase for New York, with scenes ranging from the Staten Island Ferry to Coney Island. For an enjoyable 90 minutes that will keep you entertained & get you thinking, see Amira & Sam.
Lisa K This is an amazing film by a Writer/Director to keep an eye on. Martin Starr is excellent, as is co-star Dina Shihabi, both of whom bring to life the truly uniquely individual characters in this story. Sean Mullen captures our hearts while also presenting to us a real dilemma many soldiers face after returning from years of courageously defending our freedom - maybe the rest of us have lost our way a little (or a lot)!To interweave romance, morality, suspense, intrigue, and culture - all with a backdrop of the city that we all love - is a true gift. I look forward to Sean's next movie. This one is a must see.
