Why so much hype?

Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

I rarely give any film any rating above a "7", so for me to give this film a "9" says a lot. This is a truly exceptional film. Exceptional first because it was written by the man who lived it -- Antwone Fisher. Exceptional second because of the direction provided by Denzel Washington (I'd go so far as to say his crowning achievement). Exceptional third because of the remarkable performance of Derek Luke (in fact, if there's a downside to this film, it's that I doubt that Mr. Luke will ever turn in a better performance than this; that's inconceivable...and remarkable since this was his very first screen role. The story is heart rending. A young sailor has anger issues that are threatening his naval career. He is ordered to see a Navy shrink (Denzel Washington). Although not a smooth relationship, the two form a bond and Fisher is urged to seek out his real family (he was born out of wedlock to a woman in a penal institution and his father was killed the same year; he went into the foster care system (another tragedy); lived on the street for a while; and finally went into the Navy). The ending of the film is about as uplifting as any film could be...but that's only after a very difficult reunion with his mother. As I said, Derek Luke's performance is stunning. Denzel Washington is very believable as a Naval psychiatrist, although the main credits for Washington here go for his acting. Joy Bryant is very good as Luke's girlfriend. Viola Davis's brief role as Luke's mother is remarkable.Really, for pure drama, this is an absolutely top notch film...and it's a true story.

The movie that I watched is Antwone Fisher, directed by Denzel Washington and written by Antwone Fisher. It is an autobiographical drama about Antwone Fisher. He is guided by a Navy psychiatrist, and confronts his past and connects with family he never knew existed. There was a huge array of things I noticed in the movie. The biggest of which was how it wasn't only white people that abused and exploited African Americans, it was also African Americans that exploited and abused people of their own race. For example, the foster parent of Antwone and the daughter of the foster parent treated Antwone horribly. I had always known how badly African Americans were treated, and I had always known how orphans were treated in many places, but I had never even thought about how much African American orphans were treated before and even now. Antwone Fisher was constantly threatened, beat up, and even sexually abused by his foster family. The frequency of how much the foster mother used the word 'nigger' really made me cringe each time I heard it. It was so bad that at one point, she didn't use the word 'nigger' in a sentence and it really surprised me. Even after 20 or so years when Antwone finally came back to get information about his parents, the first thing the foster mother said was a sentence including a truckload of the word 'nigger.'This move really helped my understanding of the era because seeing is always better than simply learning about it in a classroom. By seeing, I was able to see things through the point of view of a single individual, who seemed to have things going for him in the Navy. However, more and more problems with the past showed up and it taught me that even the most normal of people may have serious emotional, mental, or psychological problems. It also helped me truly think about the importance of having someone to talk to. I guess you could say that I am a fairly privileged student and young man, since I've never had to worry about the necessities of life and I've always had people I could trust and talk to. The idea of not having people around that I can talk to really scares me. Overall, I really enjoyed watching this film and understand why this movie has 17 awards and 18 nominations. I personally found this movie really touching and I really enjoyed watching the progress he made throughout the movie.

Antwone Fisher is a movie about self discovery, but also about the emotional inertia that moves us to the places we end up to be.Antwone Fisher has his options already narrowed because of the place where he was born and the parents he had. His life is a reflection of a sad statistic, and he can hardly blame others to what happened to him because, as his psychologist mentioned, is the result of passing the same treatment generation after generation.Antwone Fisher made me think about how important is to know the forces that, often without your explicit knowledge, push you where you are, and if you don't like the places where these forces carry you, to know that there is a way out. This is not a hero movie, nor a movie of beggar turned millionaire. Is a movie about the path of self-discovery and self-healing.Key phrase: "Sorry Mr. Director, but the chick is way too pretty for that kid"

A great story, based on a true story about a young black man and all the difficulties along the road. Being that this is Denzel Washington's first ever movie that he himself was gonna direct, i have to admit i was a tad sceptical, but who wouldn't be..? But then again, he's a great actor with plently of years of experience, and the end result turned out great. The story is told in a great way, making you that has had difficulties during your childhood, and young adulthood, see yourself in those situations. So, it hits you hard, letting you know your not the only one going through hell. In all, a touching story about a young man trying to make it in this f***ed up world. (The story is based on the life of Antwone Fisher, born 3. August 1959, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, whom was also the writer of this movie) Strongly recommended. 8/10
