Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Sabah Hensley
This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Portia Hilton
Blistering performances.

What I believe drew me to this film, is the fact that ATL was like one of those classic African-American films that captures what truly goes on in a predominantly African- American community without having it to include violence. Yes, there is a scene where Ant gets shot, but it's not like something you would see in Boyz In Da Hood, Menace to Society, etc... Each character comes from different backgrounds, and you can tell by that based on Rashad's description of each scene. The film portrays Atlanta showing both rich and poor, but not racially stereotyping and segregating. This film tells one of those positive stories that are always forgotten in African-American portrayals of cinema and television. This is relivable because this story was also similar to my high school days.

ATL a movie with heart. It did not try to be over the top. It told a deep story about family bonds and love. Drug dealing and crime where shown in their true light. One part that stuck with me was seeing the young brother selling on a corner then he gets rolled by older dealers for his drugs. Perfect song was playing in the background. Great bit of directing there. T.I. and the actor from Forrest Gump have chemistry. I felt that uncle and nephew bond. I liked seeing a movie about life in a tough neighborhood that was about relationships. It wasn't a story about drug dealers only looking to make money. This was real life beautifully told.

If Breakfast Club is a thoroughly mediocre movie that gets a 7.8 just because people get all sentimental and can relate to all of its style and stereotypes, then ATL is getting a 4.1 because IMDb.com users are not getting sentimental and can't relate to it. I'm going to be kind and not cry racism, but rather demographics. They storyline is relevant to those can relate to it. Is being smart and black selling out? Is the hood to be romanticized? Is life just bitches and rims? Is selling weed better than working at Wendy's? What is the penalty for being fake? How do blacks keep it real after they attain success and move to the big house on the hill? It's a good movie, not the 10 I gave it, but I just gave it a 10 to combat the undeserved 4.1. If Breakfast Club gets a 7.8, then ATL gets a 7.8, even though both movies are great for what they are, adolescent coming of age movies. In Breakfast Club, jock, princess and freak all get together and maybe the adult authority figures gain understanding as well. Is that any different than what happens in ATL? Just the demographics are different, although the story is universal.

I really don't understand the low user rating for this film - the number of "one" ratings is unnaturally high, suggesting that there was some sort of campaign to skew the rating lower. ATL is a very good movie, despite it's rather clichéd plot. It's made with energy and style and an obvious love for the characters. I was especially impressed by the movie's complex understanding of how these characters talk and interact with each other. I'm kind of a sucker for this kind of movie (I was also a fan of The Wood, a much lighter and brighter version of ATL), so I may have "over-rated" it slightly - but believe me, it does not deserve its current 3.7 rating.
