Boring, long, and too preachy.

Watch something else. There are very few redeeming qualities to this film.

In other words, this film is a surreal ride.

Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.

I sometimes wonder what actors think when they watch the result of their last project. and the movie not only is a disaster movie but a disaster. Are they just happy they got payed and can move on to the next, not at all concerned with their own artistic reputation? Atomic train is a disaster movie and even more a disaster of a movie, but I guess that's what you got not only Rob Lowe for, but all the people responsible for this rubbish. It's like much of the cargo on the train, a total waste, but someone's got to do it, as long as it pays the bills. It's a pity about Lowe, he's doing an alright job, but I had better hopes after watching him doing the best ever JFK impression in Killing Kennedy (2013), though Atomic Train is from 1999. He's not at all a bad actor, and that also goes for many in the cast here. But reading the script, doing some research, they should have stayed away and found another project. A film plot more full of logical flaws, characters with no common sense and total non realism, is hard to find, if not impossible.

Some reviewers are measuring the movie with calipers and are quick to point out that a train might not have the same kind of brakes as shown in the film. That does not matter at all. This is not a train. This is a movie. I would remind everyone that Superman cannot fly. He has no propulsion system. Dracula does not really turn into a bat. Star Wars did not really happen and it will not happen. These are movies for entertaining some viewers. This film has great camera work throughout. The acting is very believable. The casting is fine. There is a chick flick quality of soap opera mixed with sensational action and adventure scenes. Rob Lowe does many of his own stunt scenes. I did not watch it with a slide rule pondering each railroad error. I watched it to see the action and the huge scale of the explosive scenes. I don't worry if it is possible or impossible or likely or unlikely. Some people in California will get an idea from this what life might be like after an earthquake that destroys a major city. I will suggest it might not be a good movie for railroad employees to use as job training. If you like to watch a big long action film with a family, this is a superb choice.

I just watched this movie on USA. I'd always caught the very end of it, but never seen the whole thing. Now I'm sorry to say that I have. While I don't know much about the atomic end, I was a chemistry major in college. First of all, sodium is a metal, not a liquid. There is no way it could "leak" out of a barrel. The only thing leaking would be mineral oil with is what sodium is stored in. Secondly, while it does react violently with water, I cannot imagine it reacting with a huge fireball. I still have no idea how the movie gets from this point to the end because I was so disgusted with the lack of research into simple chemical reactions that I changed the channel.

This is a very long film and I would have to write a book about it to do it justice. Instead, I have decided to make a few observations about particular aspects of the film which amused me.a) John Seger (Rob Lowe) - It is abundantly clear from the moment this character appears that he is destined to become the hero of the film on the basis of his good looks. Unfortunately, he does absolutely nothing to justify his status as the hero. For no reason, he, a train wreck investigator, is airlifted onto a moving train with a nuclear weapon on board. He then proceeds to do nothing to prevent the impending disaster. The director is so desperate to make him look like a hero that, in one extraordinary scene, he stands at the front of the train pulling faces and shouting as if this is going to slow the train down. Nevertheless his pointless antics earn him a phone call from the President of the USA (no less) who congratulates him presumably for being the best looking guy on the train. Needless to say, the train driver and various mechanics, who have risked their lives making genuine efforts to stop the train, receive no thanks at all - after all - they're ugly.b) Interestingly the nuke actually goes off in this film and, as one would expect, all of the main characters survive the blast.c) Watch out for the moment where it is announced on a large TV screen in Denver that a bomb is destined for the city. Instantaneously, people start throwing dustbins through shop windows and stealing TVs... why???? This film is hilarious and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys train movies as a genre.
