Tied for the best movie I have ever seen

disgusting, overrated, pointless

A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.

The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.

The movie lives up to its trailer's promise of being like nothing you have seen before. It follows Bubby, a middle-aged man who has lived alone with his abusive mother in a small apartment, not allowed to leave and being indoctrinated by her false views of the world. She sexually abuses him, berates him and treats him like a young child. As a result he has become a weird, introverted and confused character, often thinking and acting like a child. People are uneasy around him and he seems frightening, possibly mentally challenged and dangerous. Nicholas Hope therefore does a fantastic job in adding sympathy to Bubby, finding an innocence within him that begs forgiveness despite any horrific and strange acts he may commit - the audience acknowledging and empathising with his harsh upbringing. When Bubby leaves his home for the first time he is alone in a world that is completely novel to him. The is where the film really opens up; Bubby views everything with a wonder of seeing it for the first time, from dogs, to cars, to cranes and even just seeing people other than his mother or father. Using different directors of photography for each new set-piece that Bubby stumbles across greatly adds to his sense of wonder and excitement. Although not understanding social norms or how things work, Bad Boy Bubby progresses much like an alternative Forest Gump with Bubby simply moving through the film being entranced by little things here and there, finding himself in strange situations and meeting new people along the way. Themes are often dark and violent, it creating a tense atmosphere with the audience never knowing quite what will happen next, or what Bubby will do. However as a result small, stark moments of beauty stand out all the more - one particular highlight being when Bubby stops to listen to a young violinist playing in an empty building. However Bad Boy Bubby is not without its flaws. The pacing can often be slow, with some scenes feeling out of place and perhaps too long - one monologue condemning belief in God an example of this, going off in a tangent that doesn't quite fit with the rest of the movie's tone. The fact that Bubby manages to plod through the movie for so long without being hurt or arrested is also slightly unbelievable, however it would not make for a good film otherwise. Bad Boy Bubby is a movie that definitely should not be missed - utterly original, at times hard to watch and at times beautiful. It tackles ambitious topics to varying effectiveness, however in seeing the world through Bubby's eyes the film invites audiences to acknowledge and appreciate the little things in life; and while Bubby is often violent, frightening or confused, his pure innocence really brings the film to life and is a persona unlike any seen before. While it is not perfect, there is more than enough unique and sublime aspects to make Bad Boy Bubby truly memorable.

I give 10 out of 10 for originality. When going to see this, I really didn't know what I was in for, only relying on shorts I had seen for the movie. When first seeing the poster, my impression the film was English. It's claustrophobic setting works, in the story of a childlike adult, brilliantly portrayed by Hope (not many actors could pull this off, so convincingly), who's been hid from the world for 35 years, by his domineering, at times, cruel, obese mother, who even involves him in incestuous sex. Understandably, some people, absolutely detest this film with a passion. There are some absolutely disgusting scenes, that will disturb and repel some. We follows Bubby's escape, after gladwrapping his parents to death. The father's an ars.h.le, a pretend minister, clerical collar and all, who beats and abuses Bubby, his character all so repelled me. We see from Bubby's POV, his first experience into the outside worlds, where within not even ten seconds, a bunch of hoons, come screaming around a corner, hitting him with insults. He manages to sex it up with a salvo nurse, then gets on the wrong side of a few people, where he ends up with a struggling rock band. The way the police are portrayed in this is ugly, let me tell you. The crux of the film slowly sees Bubby falling in love with a woman, a carer for the autistic, where he even blows off an offer from two young nude hotties. Apparently they haven't got great, big whoppers of things, they're not angel t..ts. On the whole this Adelaide effort really earns poor movie status, over it's subject and ugly, repellent elements. Some scenes will have you turning, mostly sexually related ones, or ones that cat lovers should avoid. One young girl was actually, affected mentally, by the film. Yes, it is a film of inspiration, and of what the big wide world offers, outside of four walls, with only roaches and cats for company, but what went before, I meant. The interior and exterior angle, truly works. I felt shut in, I was waiting to escape. The interior section of film seemed longer, when viewing it in the cinema. In that respect, De Heer has pulled off something, and so has Hope. Check out 'Man Of Flower's' Norman Kaye's monologue. Heavy.

This was a wild ride and not for the faint-hearted. The movie has been around a while but has lost none of it's impact. It's original, refreshing, gross and strangely compelling. The start doesn't give you any indication as to where it is going to end up. There is a shift in momentum after half an hour when the movie hits the streets running. It's quite eclectic, with some random events going on that may or may not add to the flow but all are designed to build a picture of mayhem through perfectly timed mimicry. If you are a cat lover then this movie is not recommended for you. Amongst all the grime and squalor is a real child like sweetness, ever present but regularly blown away with yet another rage against past injustices. There is also large doses of dark humour. I found this movie unique, engrossing and enjoyable. Sure there is some unevenness and other minor flaws but the full package was plenty for me. Thank you, thank you – I applaud your efforts

Yes, at first sight this might seem like an usual movie. But that's only a good thing in this case and also seems to be the entire point of it. It holds up a mirror to today's (or 1993's) society. No, this movie is not typical Hollywood stuff. It's an Australian production, that takes a more sort of European cinematic approach, with its storytelling and also minimalism. Guess this movie is considered to be an art-house film but that is only because it doesn't really fit in mainstream cinema's. Saying something is art-house doesn't necessarily mean it's also artsy fartsy. As a matter of fact, most of the time the movies are perfectly accessible ones but there isn't really a mainstream crowd for them, which is the foremost reason why movies like this end up in art-houses and on DVD's, hidden somewhere back into an obscure section. This is a very dark comedy, that through its comedy could had be a sort of cute movie but instead the movie decides to be very dark and dirty. It's a movie that is literally filled with shocking themes such as incest, killings, crime and rape. All no laughing matter you would say but it gets seen all through the eyes of an adult person who has never been into the outside world. He's of course naive and totally oblivious to everything that is good or right but that is really what the movie tries to say with it. Because the entire movie gets told from the eyes of a person who has entered the big evil world for the first time, we get to see how rotten society itself is, when for instance also people try to abuse- and take advantage of Bubby's naivety. It all does so but not really necessarily following a main story. Bubby is just roaming around, visiting places and meeting new people all the time. It suits the overall style and atmosphere of the movie that everything seems to happen by pure chance and at random. It makes it sound like this is a fragmentary movie but it in fact really is not. It at all times feels like one whole because the movie simply stays purely focused on its main character.I also love the transitions the movie goes trough. At times its being an extremely dark and depressing movie but at others it also manages to be an hopeful and even funny one. You'll laugh at some of the movie its dark themes and moments and some of Bubby's his backward antics. It's such a rich filled movie, with basically every emotion in it. Don't feel ashamed to laugh at a rape sequence or a murder, this is actually what the movie wanted you to do. It wants you to see how crazy the world can get at times, seen all through the eyes of an oblivious and crazy person. Due to this approach it also becomes a real provoking movie. It really is the ultimate Nicholas Hope role and I have yet to see something by him that tops it. He simply suits the role very well, not only just with his acting but also with his looks. He's a dirty and potentially very dangerous guy but yet you start to really love him and hope he ends up well. Now I'm interested in seeing more Rolf de Heer movies.8/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
