mraculeated The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
Cassandra Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
lyhendy Tennet excels in this playing the main nutter. The film lacks something but luckily it's not too long. It's entertaining enough.
davejderisi When i first heard about the plot of this movie I felt very excited and couldn't wait to buy it on blu ray. I really like horror movies where someone is found tied up or trapped in a house. Then I realized it was directed by Dean Devlin, who directed the cheesy and over the top "Geostorm" I wasn't sure what to expect since this is only the directors second feature film and its quite a genre jump from his last movie. "Bas Samaritan" isn't a bad movie, but it's definitely not a "scary" movie either. It's a susoense film, driven by many edge of your seat moments. The script is written kinda cool, how it has the two main protagonists going back and forth between places and it spands over the course of several days instead of just one night. It was also overall well made and had a confident run time. The problem, tho, is that it's not really scary and they kinda held back with violence yet wanted to give it an R rating. The movie was also boring in some parts. There is nothing to "predict" so it all becomes quite routine with a slight edge. The production values are too prominent and its almost too clean. This movie would have benefited from some grit. It wasn't until after the half way mark that the movie really started to interest me. There was one or two violent scenes that were done well but that's it and it took an hour to get to them. The acting is good though, especially from David Tennant. Good movie for light hearted horror fans but definitely nothing to write home about.
Carlo Salvadori This is a total letdown. It has the pace and "character development" of a crappy tv movie, full of clichès like the psycho rich billionaire, who is so unhinged that his catch phrases become involontarily hilarious pretty soon, or the clumsy hero that has become a sort of 21st century trope, exemplified in contrast by the bravado of the "damsel in distress" who hits the villain first and then excoriates the protagonist with a most brilliant line like "This is how you save someone". Too long, too slow, too predictable.
dillllinja Firstly. This is a film which attempts to serve the purpose of 3 people. David Tennant - Robert Sheehan - Dean Devlin I know of the first 2 but not the last. Tennant is trying to become a well known face in the US, fair enough, and he performs his role in this particular film well enough, I mean, he has the right face and personality to play this type of role, but, he is not really a movie star is waiting and never could be, though I do potentially see him as a Bobby Axelrod type of character in a TV series, but nothing much more. This movie seemed to also serve to promote Robert Sheehan and wrote him in as to get him in eg an Irish kid in the US puts him in the 0.03 percent category of real life statistics, if that, and so this is a vehicle to show his talents etc, fair enough. I myself personally thought the film was okay but also that it was a bit of a rip off. Robert Sheehan constantly annoyed me and the type of acting displayed suggests he wants to become the 'genuine lad' kind of character. He came across as 'squirmy' and very unbelievable. I always struggle to respect a film when an 'unkown' director or producer adorns the end credits with (in this case) 'A Dean Devlin Production' - as if anyone knows who he is or also as if the film is so good that your ego feels the need to do that? It is desperate and creates an imbalance i.e it is undeserved and akin to 'faking it till you make it', and the decision behind that alone (putting 'A Dean Devlin Production') shows nothing but 'fraudulence' or as if trying to 'convince' us or a potential producer into thinking this guy really is 'the real deal'... and if he had not been so arrogant to do that then the production is not open to this critique (albeit from a nobody like me). The film would of been better with better casting and because the basics were definitely there to showcase the directorial and production talent, and the camera work and photography were very good. Tennant played the part well enough but the problem is that he is too well known already to then convince us that he isn't the timelord? and his face is only compatible as a leading man if it is a 'B' movie only and that is the truth. He could appear in 'A' movies but his roles would be limited, though still a damn good career nonetheless. Robert Sheehan is not convincing in a lead role, and writing him in to the script specifically and and as if he is some sort of Daniel Day Lewis in the making is just way to obvious for me personally and wreaks of fake desperation. Okay movie., but less of the fake blockbuster credits, and if Dean Devlin can be a bit more 'humble' then he may go on to make a bigger movie within this genre.
