"Bangkok Girl" is a 'remarkably accomplished, beautifully photographed and intimate debut documentary that puts a human face on the devastating social issue that, sadly, is the fate of too many impoverished girls.' The documentary provides a glimpse of Thailand's sex tourism told through the experiences of a 19-year-old bar girl named Pla.

LouHomey From my favorite movies..
PiraBit if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Robert Joyner The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Bluebell Alcock Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
odo5435 I haven't been to Thailand and know no more than the next person about the sex trade in that country. This documentary adds nothing to that knowledge. The film's maker seems to be earnestly pushing me towards his conclusion but does not offer any real evidence to support his claim. All we're given is a longish interview with the subject of the documentary (which seems to ask more questions than it answers) and a couple of short views of boorish foreigners, one of whom is particularly obnoxious in his drunkenness. There are no particularly incisive questions nor any hard evidence. In particular, there isn't any interviews with anyone (government officials, medical practitioners, industry insiders, etc.) who can offer a balanced view of the industry.Overall this is a poor effort at documentary making. The cynic inside me tells me the maker is trying to make an emotional film that will readily sell. I hope, for his subject's sake, that isn't true.
wolverine34 I watched this out of curiosity. I am never one to say that if there are bad places in a country, then the whole country is like that. I can only imagine that Bangkok has it's seedy places, going by reports, but I do not believe it is all like this. Unless I actually go, I'll never know as I do not judge a book by it's cover. As for the documentary, the girl was the main feature, being beautiful with bright white teeth it was always nice to see her smile. Maybe a must in the sex industry to have white teeth, not sure.I did enjoy watching it, maybe thanks to Pla, but it is disappointing to only show a small area of Bangkok, unless it is a very small city? In a documentary, I do not think you are supposed to come to a conclusion that the main star dies, but I did. I decided to try and read more into it and it seems nobody knows for sure, unless the thread I read is true.Documentaries are supposed to be a true insight into things, and if this person fabricated this, it shouldn't be aired. I was reading a forum on the whole documentary with some comments, one of which appears to be from the Director, who states he called Pla's friend and was told she was dead (which may be true), however he never replied again when this was posted: 'Speakthai 4 weeks ago Hi Jordan, as a very close friend of Pla and her husband I can assure you that Pla is alive. I don't know how she will react finding out that she playes a major role in your film documentation. Besides of that I agree with most what TravelinAsia said. Westernstyle finger-pointing is a very bad manner in Thailand and besides of this it is only - if ever - one side of the medal.' This is why I give it 1 star. I did enjoy watching it, but if the death is a lie to sell the story, then it deserves 0 stars as it is not a documentary but an exploitation. Until the truth is told it stays at 1 star, just for the smile :).
catpillar-1 Hello together,i was very shocked about the film, because i saw in Bangkok the same like in the film. It makes me very sad. I saw the film a few days ago but now i am thinking about pla, most girls have nothing to change - they must work in bar because they are the money-maker for her family.Up-to-date: But now there are different statements about pla. Is she dead or alive!? Some people say, she is alive and now outside of thailand, other say she get killed by people of this business and other one told me she get dead by car-accident.Can someone who really know whats up with her tell me the please. Thank you very much, catpillar-1
wrrichards Pla seems 100 percent real but the voice-over in the story seems 100 percent bullThe film Maker. He seems to have filmed it with a handicam I think the Katoeys and Pla had no idea they were taking part in a money making operation. He even complains when he has to pay a small "fine" to the local police who could just as easily, put him in the local jail, confiscated his equipment permanently and eventually deported him for working without the correct permits.( i think they should have)but i doubt it happened.Pla and the other players probably thought he was just a tourist with a camera who, eventually would actually, pay.Wayne
