Brazilian badlands, April 1910. Tonho is ordered by his father to avenge the death of his older brother. The young man knows that if he commits this crime, his life will be divided in two: the twenty years he has already lived and the few days he has left to live, before the other family avenges their son's death. He is torn between fulfilling his ancestral duty and rebelling against it, urged by his younger brother Pacu. That's when a tiny travelling circus passes through the vast badlands where Tonho's family lives.

Sameer Callahan It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Aneesa Wardle The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
SnoopyStyle It's 1910 in the Brazilian badlands. The Breves run a decaying dusty family sugarcane plantation. Its best days are long gone since the lost of the slave labor. There is an on-going blood feud with the neighboring Ferreiras. Tonho (Rodrigo Santoro) is ordered by his father to avenge his older brother but he is hesitant to follow in the family tragedy. He falls for fireswallower Clara from the traveling circus.I love the dusty dirty sunburned style of the movie. The story is pretty simplistic Greek tragedy. I would like for the movie to develop the Breves family a lot more. They are a pretty close off bunch and it's hard to feel for them. I like the setting a lot more than the characters or their stark melodrama.
movie reviews This film though fluff is pretty fluff. Almost any still from the film could be framed. Even the main character Tonho is a playgirl pinup. Of course a lot of this imagery is computer generated---real life is not that pretty. The actual story is another matter. Symbolism is over supplied by the metric tonne and it is underlined and heavy handed to boot. You begin to wonder who the director aimed this film at audience wise = those of limited intelligence trying to be deep? Perhaps also known as typical art film festival attendees? In the end boy gets girl and breaks feud thanks to adoring younger brother. Deep? No. Corny and over dramatic? Yes. Believable? No.This film becomes a curious thing an art film trivialized or almost a parody of an art film.Is it worth watching?... Sure just lower your expectations.
J. M. Verville 'Behind The Sun' finds itself rather lost in its' own imagery -- albeit very lovely imagery. It is undeniable that the film is beautifully shot but I think that the story, at times, is left a little blank. It left me wanting a lot filled in... I was burning with questions that essentially were left unanswered.Sometimes that is an artistic way of presenting a film but in this case it was just annoying. I think the director was trying to communicate much of the story without words but was not doing that excellent of a job of it.However, the acting is outstanding and the dialogue is impressive. They're the backbone of the film. The setting felt limited and at times stuffy... But by and large, the beautiful cinematography and the quality dialogue made up for the lack of the rest. Worth a watch.
crysclr To be honest, I only rented the film so that I could swoon over handsome Rodrigo Santoro after watching his brief, but memorable role in the romantic comedy "Love Actually". Little did I know how good this film was. I didn't mind the subtitles because they were clear and non-complex. I loved hearing the language. I don't know; there's something mysteriously alluring about Portuguese; it has this smooth, almost rhythmic flavor about it. I was thoroughly entertained by the little boy they called "kid" aka "Puca" (played by Ravi Ramos Lacerda); he's basically a kid wanting to drown in the world of his fantasies but has to uphold these responsibilities of labor jus like the rest of his family. I found him to be sweet, assertive, and pure comedy. All the roles were praisingly convincing and held my attention the whole way through. I couldn't get over how young Rodrigo looked even though the movie was taped but only two years ago. hehe...young, but oh so adorable :o). He doesn't say much, but...sometimes, words just aren't necessary. Neways, I think the film's great. Not one metaphor or streak of symbolism seemed out of place; not one character seemed a bit too exaggerated or too thin in personality. I really liked this film. Honestly? I really did. =) hehe it has my vote.
