How wonderful it is to see this fine actress carry a film and carry it so beautifully.

It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

In 1984 London, sexy socialite Angelina Jolie (as Sarah Jordan) is startled when rugged doctor Clive Owen (as Nicholas "Nick" Callahan) crashes a charity event to slam the champagne and caviar set. A foul-mouthed rant from Mr. Owen informs Ms. Jolie and attendees they really don't understand poverty-stricken people. Jolie is moved to tears by Owen and a thin African boy. She decides to join Owen in volunteer work and they become mutually aroused, although Jolie is married to businessman Linus Roache (as Henry Bauford). The work is dirty and dangerous; Jolie is perfumed and pretty...We follow the love affair between Jolie and Owen through the 1990s... She continues to shed tears and look pretty, while he continues to rant...Acting more authentic than the co-stars are Noah Emmerich (as Elliot Hauser) and Teri Polo (as Charlotte Jordan); it might have been interesting to see them as the leads. Director Martin Campbell and company do better with subtle conveyance of adultery between Roache and Elizabeth Whitmere (as Bea). The foreshadowing provided by jeep rider Jamie Bartlett (as Joss) is also done well. Still, it's the unremarkable relationship between Jolie and Owen which commands our attention. "Beyond Borders" shouts about something much more important than mundane affairs, then downs itself in one.**** Beyond Borders (10/24/03) Martin Campbell ~ Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen, Noah Emmerich, Teri Polo

This was absolutely one of the best movies I have seen in a long time after "discovering" the intensely dark and handsome Clive Owen In "King Arthur", I wanted MORE of him and started looking up his movies to rent/OWN? When saw the story line for this one HAD to check it out and my husband and I watched such a tragic-(because these situations are based on true life people and the suffering they're enduring as I write this), coupled by Nick's losing battle to save whom he can and Angelina's heart goes out to his cause enough to bring her to the front-lines to help. I had to cover my eyes in some parts, not being able to watch some of the horrors of surgery w/o anesthesia in a hospital as backwards as something out of the Old West and a baby ripped from it's mother by angry soldiers and having a live hand grenade tossed in it's hands only to have the pin pulled by the child by accident, thus taking the life of Nick's partner in his attempt to save the child's life by being shot by the soldier in cold blood. The starving, sick people who are helpless and in constant siege by the horrors of war and supplies that cannot get to them. I cried with Nick and Sarah, I was seduced by the emotion of their love for each other and was left saddened in the end that Nick would probably never make his daughter aware that he is her real father because he knew it would likely make matters worse for her if she knew. The images in this film will be with me for days to come!!!! Beautiful movie that showed compassion, strength to do what you know is right against all odds and that love is possible no matter WHERE you are!!!! Clive and Angelina were beautiful together and it's been sometime since a movie moved me to utter tears!!!!

I thought the story and acting was believable and very moving. Those that thought the romantic chemistry was tepid don't understand love within the context of life's responsibilities and goals that aren't all about you. Some people sacrifice their own passion for the greater good. There is more passion when you have to hold it in your heart and not have everything you want immediately, and you still love each other for many years out of pure respect and admiration. The political side is heartbreaking and very accurate. I teach using this material in my high school history and adult international English classes. My students are always deeply moved by this story and my international students often didn't know about the severity of the political situations before they saw the movie. They loved it as much as I did.

Good film. I still do not understand all this desire to discredit, underestimate movie about serious events. Really do not understand. The film tells a good story of love between actors as hypocrites Jolie and Owen. Remarkable scenes showing the drama of hunger and poverty in Africa in the world. Listen to me, let losing judgement on film this film is 10. What you do not like? The tragedy of poverty, indifference towards those who are dying of hunger? I wish that I appointed films really beautiful to see! I am so tired of all these negative reviews. You rejected the film, I reject you. The reviews on this site are very mediocre
