Scotty Burke It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review
Biff Loman I have come to realize that any film with Simon Pegg is pretty much pure gold. After the first scene of this movie I can assume that this film will be nothing short of a confirmation of my prior hypothesis. The reasoning behind my conclusion is that the first scene is a direct allusion to goodfellas. That memorable opening scene where Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta, and Robert DeNiro open the trunk of the car and see that their gangster friend is still alive, and you know the rest. Anyways, back to the film at hand. The plot of this film follows a couple of call center employees as they attempt to blackmail a pervert priest which ends up going horribly wrong. Then it goes even wronger. Then it goes even wrongerer. The one word that comes to mind which might begin to describe the events which follow is cluster***k. A movie with such perfectly written dark humor is difficult to conclude, however this movie does so with such perfect poetic justice that it seems unreal. This Jean Baptiste Andrea's film brings to mind the works of the Coen brothers with the clever twists, and the sarcastic/cynical commentary on human nature and the question of morality.
Mark Honhorst When I bought this film, I wasn't expecting much. And, at first, I was right. The movie seemed unbelievably sappy and light, but I decided to give it a chance anyway. It just got darker and darker as the film went along! Although not quite as funny as I would've liked, it was well written(except for a climax similar to the film "Shallow Grave", where the girl finds out what is in the bag), because there are more plot twists than an M Night Shy uh... however you spell it film, and a lot of things about our so called "heroes" that we didn't know before. There's also plenty of disturbing deaths for gore fans, including a woman being axed in the head and hit by a car, a man falling and breaking his skull open on a toilet, a diabetic being forced to eat a lollipop until he dies, and so many more. The only reasons I gave this movie a 9 instead of a 10 were because it could've been funnier, Simon Pegg's fake American accent just sounded, well, fake, and that the film seems to want to borrow humor from "Shaun of the Dead", but almost fails because Pegg is the only cast member from that film. That said, it had a few moments where I genuinely laughed, and a few where I nearly gasped with revulsion. So, a pretty fun movie with a twist I overlooked: David Schwimmer in something that doesn't suck? Wow! What a twist!
Petri Pelkonen In the beginning Charlie Wood is an ordinary family man, who pushes his little daughter on a swing. We are in a small town in Oregon.Charlie's wife Penelope is a cop and he used to be a teacher. Now he gets a lousy job as a call center employee and gets fired on his first day.His former colleague Gus knows how to get some cash. They would blackmail Reverend Smalls who has frequently turned up in the company database of visitors to illegal porn websites. Also Josie McBroom, a former teenage pageant queen takes part in the deal.Something goes wrong and a man of the cloth ends up dead. But it's not the Reverend, it's his wife's lover Max.It's Charlie who kills the man by dumping him in a septic tank thinking he was dead already. And Reverend's wife ends up with an axe in her head, something Josie does. The wife had killed the Reverend. Also a policeman ends up dead by slipping on a toilet and breaking his skull. Now all they have to do is get rid of the bodies. There's 2 million dollars for them to share, something the Reverend had left. But things don't always happen as planned. Now here's a twisted movie.Big Nothing (2006) is directed by Jean-Baptiste Andrea.David Schwimmer does a great job as Charlie, the decent man who makes a wrong decision.Natascha McElhone is terrific as his wife Penelope.Simon Pegg is brilliant as Gus.Alice Eve is marvelous as Josie.Jon Polito is fantastic as Agent Hymes, who has diabetes.Mimi Rogers is very good as Mrs. Smalls. Also great work by Julian Glover, who plays 80 year old blind man. It's enjoyable to watch how Shcwimmer's character turns from the nice guy to...something else.To this man who's capable of killing a man.In one scene he lets the diabetic agent Hymes eat a lollipop and die. This is a comedy that has very dark humor.I had a good time watching it.
Nick Damian I watched The Big Nothing, Run Fat Boy Run and Hot Fuzz this week all with Simon Pegg as leads.Hot Fuzz was horrible and this was just a riot. It's dark...it's gruesome and it's funny - without a whole bunch of needless swearing or nonsense shooting. The cast was good, David Schwimmer was perfect as the wimpy guy. A better role than he ever had in Friends.Simon Pegg lost his accent and is pretty decent in this role. It's a trip that has an odd ending. This was also filmed in Isle Of Man, but I don't see where - as it's all exterior scenes in British Columbia.
