Kitschy musical remake of "Bachelor Mother". Debbie Reynolds plays an over-eager clerk in a large department store and Eddie Fisher plays the boss' son. After getting fired from her job, she finds an adorable baby on the steps of the foundling home and the folks inside mistake her for the mother. Fisher, well-meaning, but obtuse, tries to help her out with the baby, and the buds of romance begin to appear. Meanwhile old Merlin, the owner of the store, thinks he just might be a grandfather...

Lucia Ayala It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Aspen Orson There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.
Yazmin Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
taylorjan-63962 I love musicals and had never heard of this one. After watching some of it. I no longer wonder why.I love Debbie Reynolds but even she can't improve this film. The film begins with a terrible song and singer, and then Debbie and an odd sounding woman - who I thought at first was Lauren Bacall - start singing and it's dreadful! I've heard of Eddie Fisher but this is the first film of his I've seen.. He's not a natural, his acting is poor, really poor. It seems as though his lines are stuck near the camera. The songs aren't good and his singing is dreadful.Unlike Singing in the Rain, Guys and Dolls etc this film is very dated. This a gift but its off to the charity shop.
Michael_Elliott Bundle of Joy (1956) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Polly (Debbie Reynolds) is fired from her job and on the way home she sees a young baby boy that has been left on the steps of an orphanage. She goes to take the child in there and is mistaken for the mother. The store owner goes to the woman's workplace and convinces the owner's son (Eddie Fisher) that he should hire the mother back. Soon Polly and the rich owner's son begin to fall in love. This here is a remake of BACHELOR MOTHER and there's no question that it was a mainstream and crowd-pleasing picture that fans of Fisher and Reynolds will enjoy. There's also no question that their relationship was a media storm back in the day and this is the type of cute film that only Hollywood could produce. There's no question that this is far from a masterpiece and I'd argue that it's not even a good movie but at the same time there's enough charm scattered throughout to make it worth watching. The best thing the film has going for it is the chemistry between the two stars but more on that in a bit. The worst thing about the picture is the screenplay, which is pretty standard and routine stuff. There's certainly nothing overly original or challenging about the picture as the main goal was to lay on the sugar and that's exactly what happens. The screenplay is quite predictable but I guess that's to be expected. As I said, the chemistry between Fisher and Reynolds is actually very good and they make a very cute and charming couple here.We even get some nice support from Adolphe Menjou, Una Merkel and Tommy Noonan. The entire cast is certainly good here and they manage to pour on the charm without any issue. The songs are decent for what they are but I'd argue that there's really not a "greatest hit" here. The cinematography is nice and there's no doubt that the color is quite good and catchy. BUNDLE OF JOY isn't going to win any major awards but fans of the cast should enjoy it.
writers_reign Back in the day (1935)Austria cranked out a blend of schmaltz and strudel called Little Mother, it found its way to the private screening rooms in Hollywood and emerged a year or so later as Bachelor Mother, a vehicle for the now non-dancing Ginger Rogers and charm personified David Niven. This is still the definitive version despite and especially in spite of this dire remake - with lacklustre songs yet, from the usually reliable Josef Myrow and Mack Gordon, Saccherine Dabbie Reynolds and prime Redwood Eddie Fisher. Other than name- checking the support, Adolphe Menjou, Una Merkel, there's little more to say about this misguided remake.
bkoganbing Bundle Of Joy was a musical remake of one of RKO Studio's brightest comedy hits from it's hey day, Bachelor Mother. Taking the roles that Ginger Rogers and David Niven had back in 1939 are the Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston of 1956, Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds was an established musical star who was loaned out from MGM to RKO in the studio's waning days for this film. Someone decided that putting Reynolds together with her husband, pop singing star Eddie Fisher was a natural. If musicals were still in vogue, this could have for Eddie Fisher been something like Higher and Higher was for Frank Sinatra which incidentally was also an RKO film. Bundle of Joy alas was not given any songs as good as what Sinatra had in Higher and Higher.Frank's role there did not call for any great acting and neither does Fisher's here. Eddie's a likable enough fellow, the son of the head of a department store who has the idea that Reynolds is an unwed mother. How he got that idea? Like in Bachelor Mother where Ginger Rogers did the same thing, Reynolds is on her lunch break and sees an abandoned baby on the steps of a foundling home. Taking such pity on it, she takes it with her. Probably this being Christmas time definitely helped in the sentiment department. Before long everyone just assumes it's her kid, no matter what she says and does so she has to go with the flow. RKO did give Eddie and Debbie a nice supporting cast that includes Adolphe Menjou as his father and Una Merkel as her landlady. Tommy Noonan almost steals the film as Debbie's officious co-worker. Bundle Of Joy is a good enough film to spend some time during the holiday season watching. Which I did and am not sorrier for the experience.
