One of my all time favorites.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
DipitySkillful
an ambitious but ultimately ineffective debut endeavor.
Ava-Grace Willis
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.

There is so much humanity in this movie that it is almost unbearable. This movie is perfection: from the atmosphere in northern Italy in the early 1980's, the music, the landscapes, the dialogues, the feelings BUT especially the character of Elio. Thimotee Chalamet is BEYOND PERFECT. He is like an open book. All his feelings are expressed so PERFECTLY on his face: the pain, the love, the confusion. This is a masterpiece. This movie is very personal to me and certain scenes just make me explode in tears. He is spot on!!!! I remember and I can feel the pain from 30 years ago and this young actor is simply magnificent. Armie Hammer is also terrific and the father is just an amazing character. The dialogue with his son towards the end is so true, so exact, so human.... even if fairly unlikely coming from a father.... I discovered this movie well over one year after it came out. I am not a movie fanatic and I must say that except for 20 or 30 movies I tend to forget everything about them because it is seldom memorable. "Call me by your name" is the real deal! I have never felt the need to post a movie review before. My all time favorite movie was until now from 1996. It took 21 years to best it.... This one will be hard to beat! Thank you so much Luca Guadagnino and thank you Timothee Chalamet. I will watch this movie many times for years to come.

Cuz now we have a movie without character chemistry at all. I just watched it and I remember virtually nothing that happened in the movie. The atmosphere is gorgeous, the setting makes you feel that you're in the 80's. The scenery is good. Camera work is on point. The acting is there. It is a beautiful picture over all. But pointless. The story itself is very simple and crowding it with useless scenes (like walking around enjoying the sun) turns the film into a static boredom. The main flaw is a lack of chemistry between actors. The picture looks perfect with a close-ups, establishing shots or long shots but whenever there is a conversation - everything is ruined. No matter who this is - father and son, two main characters or a random girl in a street: you can not believe theirs relationships for a second. It's all horribly directed. The motivation is completely unclear cause a lot of details are missing. Why do characters initially liked each other? How did parents form their point of view? What does "Call me by your name" really mean? The only true star of the movie is a fly who also appears in the final scene. The fly was lively, memorable and worked with the environment well unlike the rest of the cast.

The setting: the italian countryside
the characters: ridiculously enthusiastic professors, grad students, and a talented, bold adolescent who transcribes schoenberg and reads voraciously (+ various caricatures of italians)
the dialogue: quotes from seventeenth century french drama, analysis of heraclitus and hegel, which fall entirely too short to add anything, but are thrown there to display how smart these people are
how much more pretentious and grotesquely bourgeois can you get?
to make things worst, the guy who is supposed to be the exotic american everyone falls for has the charisma of a paper bag, and is a terrible actor
the actor who plays the teenage character is the anchor, but the ship is too heavy for him alone to save it
