In other words, this film is a surreal ride.
Robert Joyner
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Allison Davies
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Billy Ollie
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

Around the time that Carry On Matron was made there was a concern in the United Kingdom about a declining birthrate. You couldn't prove it here by all the kanoodling and attempted kanoodling going on at this maternity hospital.Birthing babies and the prevention of that is the subject for the satire of Carry On Matron. Right about then birth control pills were at a premium in the British Isles and Sid James and his cronies have an idea to rob the Maternity Hospital of its supply of the pills. But first in order to pinch them they have to know where the hospital keeps them. That's when James gets the idea to have his son Kenneth Cope go in a disguise drag as a new matron. Of course Cope is a red-blooded British male and the job proves difficult to concentrate on, especially after he's roomed with Barbara Windsor who packs naturally what he has to use some socks to convey.Carry On regular Joan Sims is the way overdue expectant mother who is enjoying all the service the hospital provides and milking every bit of it while her husband Kenneth Connor a railroad worker has taken up residence in the waiting room waiting for his first child. Kenneth Williams is the head of the hospital, a man with issues whom he hopes that head nurse Hattie Jacques will solve. Solving everyone's issues is hospital psychologist Charles Hawtrey. It was with poignancy also that I watched Kenneth Williams pursuing Jacques and trying to explain his problems. It was a little too close to home for the real Kenneth Williams. The final robbery is borrowed somewhat from The Lavendar Hill Mob which is only right since Sid James was in that film as well.A real Carry On classic.

When I realised that this outing for the Carry On team was set in a maternity hospital I feared it would feature too many puerile jokes of the kind that spoilt many of the later films; thankfully there were too many and those that there were weren't too bad. The film had a decent, if rather silly plot; Sid James plans to break into the hospital to steal the contraceptive pills stored there and to do that he will need somebody on the inside disguised as a nurse
his son. His son Cyril isn't keen on the idea and it is surprising that he isn't spotted as a man straight away; in fact he ends up being chased by the amorous Dr Prodd, sharing a bedroom with Barbara Windsor and delivering triplets to a film star! Away from his antics the hospital's matron is attracted to the hypochondriac chief consultant and Joan Sims is a week overdue. After the unpromising start things picked up; yes there were one or two slightly dodgy jokes
even in the '70s a doctor trying to force himself onto a nurse is creepy rather than funny. The acting was good enough with the regulars playing the same sort of characters the always play; Sid James is the rogue, Hattie Jacques is the voice of authority and Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey are somewhat camp. If you've seen other carry on films you will know the sort of thing to expect; some innuendo but nothing saucier than seeing Barbara Windsor in her underwear
and even that is in a fairly innocent scene.

From the opening scenes when the camera shows the name of the maternity hospital and then pans round to a sign that says deliveries in at the rear you know it is a classic Carry On movie a fun film for the entire family as the kids will love the slapstick humour as the parents laugh at the double entendres. Another classic scene is the newt club scene between Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey. This classic Carry On will have everyone rolling about crying with laughter as the trainee nurse played by Kenneth Cole is forced to go on an emergency call out with Dr Prodd (Terry Scott) and winds up sedating the doctor with a syringe full of medication

CONTAINS SPOILERSThis "Carry On" film was made in 1972, when they were considered to be "past it". It is set at Finisham Maternity Hospital where Sid James plans to steal some pills. He is assisted by dumb Bernard Bresslaw, cockney Bill Maynard and Sid' son Kenneth Cope, disguised as a nurse. The hospital staff include Hattie Jacques as Matron, Kenneth Williams as head surgeon Sir Bernard Cutting, Charles Hawtrey as Dr FA Goode, a psychiatrist, Barbara Windsor as the nurse and Terry Scott as lecherous Dr Prodd. There is also a good supporting turn from Joan Sims as an "eating machine" expectant mother who is a month overdue and Kenneth Connor as her fed-up husband. This film ends with Sid's gang getting away and wedding bells for Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams.10 out of 10!
