Harockerce What a beautiful movie!
Bergorks If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
Quiet Muffin This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
Skyler Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
FlashCallahan Three working class friends, are coming of age. Freddie wants to rise above it all, taking a job selling life insurance, wearing a suit and tie.Snork works at the railway station and wants a girlfriend some day. Bruce talks of leaving but is on track to to a life of working at a factory, and becoming like his dad, in front of the telly with a beer. He's also trying the patience of the police officer who always gets him out of trouble.Freddie's job leads the lads toward a few small changes. He runs across a childhood friend, Julie, his boss's daughter who's engaged to the firm's top seller. Can the three live their dreams.......Whatever you think of the man, Ricky Gervais is a talented writer, and when he is working with Stephen Merchant, it's not just good comedy, it's comedy that hasn't been seen in over three decades. It's because it's not trying to be hip, it's not trying to reach out to one demographic, like many sitcoms do now, it's the more traditional comedy that is accessible to everyone, much like this.As well as having a story with a lot of heart, and a heft of emotion, it still has the wonderful punchlines and one liners that come out of nowhere and provide big laughs. There is a reference to Elton John's music that caught me off guard which was hilarious. The characters though are not as fleshed out as you'd expect them to be. The three lads could be picked out from any atypical coming of age comedy, and appear to have the same traits as any male trio of that age has. You have the intelligent one, the loose cannon, and the slightly stupid one. And the slightly stupid one always has to fat.And Emily Watson is wasted in her role. Her story and character had so much potential to be fleshed out so much, but she's resigned to do nothing more than to have a dance with one of the lads, and to encourage her daughter not to be like her.But when the writing is as good as this, and supporting characters are genuinely funny and very real, it's hard not to like it.A few of the jokes fall flat, the running joke involving Snorks tattoo is terribly misjudged and timed badly, but when there is just a high ratio of successful jokes, it doesn't really matter. If you've seen the nineties movie Boston Kickout, this will be very familiar to you, as it's basically the same premise, but played for laughs.highly recommended.
Knox D Alford III (knoxiii) I picked this film because it was written & directed by one of the most brilliant comedians of our time, Ricky Gervais. No expectations. No idea of the plot or actors. I wouldn't have it any other way. It is equally excellent as both a comedy & drama. There were no wasted scenes, making me wish there was more, yet applaud the brilliance it's construction. I haven't always enjoyed UK films, but this one could easily be an American story, or anyone's story. My summary captures the essence, but I will elaborate a bit more. As we approach adulthood, choices abound. Fundamental among these is captured in the Clash's anthem "Should I Stay or Should I Go?". The movie blends friendships, young love & dreams with the crucially important decisions that we all make that end up directing our life's trajectory. What is so utterly amazing is that it makes solid cases for both. Whether you stayed in your hometown, or ventured outward from your city of birth is represented brilliantly, giving every viewer a deeper understanding of either choice. In my case it was a sentimental reminder that the journey of 1000 miles begins with that first step or leap of faith. It didn't make feel superior for my travels, but did bring back the feelings. I did gain a deeper understanding of why for some, their hometown has all they desire. I do believe that it is necessary for people to travel during their lives or meet people who have to develop a more appreciative & wise world-view. I highly recommend this movie for the deeper understanding it provides, the laugh out loud comedy, and poignant drama with a dynamite cast. For these reasons I rate it 8/10 stars. Knox D. Alford, III
villow-woods the film some hows borrows the same characters that we have witnessed since a long time in films like lemon Popsicle or American pie etc except that this is no sex comedy as a matter of fact i was pleasantly surprised with the maturity the film was handled. all the three guys were beautifully chosen for the part. they look the part. i quite enjoyed the film it was beautifully shot with some good performances but what i really loved was the writing, the humor was kick ass in the film ... the dialogues were really funny .. the writing team please take a bow my only problem was the story it was kinda same that we have heard or seen earlier but the treatment was different.... but had fun watching the film ...
kfern-109-296994 I literally stumbled across this film one lazy day with much house work to do and thank goodness no one around - son and husband at football - bless football ( that will be the first and only time I say that!) So, armed with tea and toast and Sky Plus - just in case, I switched on. not a lover of R Gerv so my hackles were up to start with and ..thank God he had only the smallest of parts in what was a very moving and wonderful movie. The 70's were my teenage years, sadly i do relate to the wall paper! Have mentioned this movie to several of my contemporaries....sadly none of them had seen it, but then spoke to a colleague who is old enough to be my son and he was shocked that I enjoyed it and had seen it, and in fact said that i was the first person who had even admired this film.....we are now soul mates and he is my un official son. Brilliant film...did I laugh - yes......did I cry.....oh yes......what more could a film director want.....this film is in my top 20.
