It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.

There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.

Ive seen lots of sports movies that are feelgood stories where a struggling athlete/team of no hopers succeed on the court and become better people and Coach Carter is the same.
It isn't original but the story is told well. The backstories of the players are a bit flimsy but it's better for it and doesn't descend into the cheesiness of many movies of this type.
Pleasantly surprised and my wife enjoyed it too so one for the men to choose on movie night.

This was on my watch later for almost a year, before I was looking for a sports movie after finishing a sports reality series, I figured why not.Samuel L. Jackson is Ken Carter, the owner of a successful sporting goods store and a former college basketball player. He is approached by his former high school coach to take the coaching job at inner-city Richmond H.S., where Carter was a 2 time All-American nearly 20 years prior. The team won just 4 games the previous season, but he decides to take on the job regardless, mostly as a favour. A mostly predictable sports underdog story ensues. The team is run ragged in practice, sign contracts relating to academics and soon enough, the team is on a lengthy undefeated streak. Numerous side plots include Carter's son transferring to Richmond to play for him, a player and girlfriend deciding what to do about a potential baby and a player leaving the team multiple times to sell drugs.Unexpectedly, Samuel L. Jackson is fantastic and in the end, the only thing keeping this from being rated a fair bit lower. A young Channing Tatum is literally just another player and not particularly memorable and besides Ashanti as a player's girlfriend, I couldn't tell you one other person casted in this movie. The inevitable middle of the movie conflict erupts, the baby angle is abruptly and clumsily ended and the drug dealing player's supplier is the only person shot to death in two hours. On the whole, Samuel L. Jackson is fantastic in this movie, more or less playing himself as a basketball coach. But, the whole script is not great, there's no real supporting performances that lead to a good scene and I thought the film ran way too long. You may shout at the TV when Carter is about to admonish his team "I need winners off the court!", but it's not a total waste of your life either. 6/10.

Coach Carter made for quite the riveting watch. Whilst it's not quite as good as Gene Hackman's Hoosiers, it's pretty damn good in its own right. The story itself is nothing all that spectacular, despite being based on true events. You've seen this type of stuff before, but the way they managed to pull it off is what really made this movie. You may question Carter's tactics at first, but you'll soon rally behind him, and that's the powerfulness of Samuel L. Jackson's performance. The fact that he would go on strike and hold up games, simply so his players would improve academically; It's brazen, but it really got to me. His intensity was off the charts and the man was often magnetic to watch. It's a memorable performance which I rank as one of Jackson's best. Rob Brown is best known for his great performance in The Express, and he was solid as a rock here. Ashanti actually does decent here, whilst Channing Tatum makes an appearance in one of his early roles. The character that I related to the most was Junior. I empathized with his plight, and I give credit to Nana Gbewonyo for his awesome performance. It also helps that the Basketball action is very exciting to watch. It felt like I was watching a real basketball game at times, and that's one of the biggest compliments I can give itFinal Thoughts: This is an excellent film. If you love basketball, true stories, and Samuel L. Jackson, I can guarantee you will find things to like about this one. At least I hope you do8/10

Coach Carter is a very formulaic sports film that follows every rule in the rulebook for sports film. However, thanks to a very centralized, high-powered performance by Samuel L. Jackson, this film is able to stand on its own two feet. There are some emotional moments when you are rooting for the underdog, in this case the Richmond Oilers, to win it all. This film also showcases the tough time people have growing up in poor areas and the broken-down American education system.Thomas Carter's film is about a legendary basketball player named Ken Carter who goes back to his old high school to coach a number of violent, uneducated people the true game of basketball and how the game will change their attitudes, and more importantly their lives.Samuel L. Jackson does one heck of a job in his role. Thanks to his inspiring performance, this movie is worth watching. He is passionate about this role and despite acting as a bully to his players, you feel for him since you know that he cares for his players and will do anything to give them a better life and go to college.Overall, this is an above-average sports film thanks to Jackson. Even without him, this film would have been good despite having almost every cliché in the book. But hey, this is quality filmmaking. I was able to enjoy the drama and all the games. I liked how they went from the bad news bears of basketball to playing like champions. I rate this film 9/10.
