Tetrady not as good as all the hype
Leoni Haney Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.
Lucia Ayala It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Phil K This is the way I think horror movies should be: unpredictable, horrific, and in their own tumultuous direction. This is a fantasy horror adventure and it strays from the same old "Hollywood-horror"' formula, and for that it is very commendable, but not only for that, but for utilizing the poignancy of the original H.P Lovecraft story and adapting it appropriately in the modern age.I am a fan of the director, and as similar with his other titles this film is full of real props, costumes and monster designs that are slimy and horrific. Even though I think the film could use a smoother editing job, I could tell that a lot went into maintaining the dark and archaic mood, making it a truly satisfying horror classic.
siderite Dagon is the first story Lovecraft wrote and this adaptation is both good in the sense it captures the original material's unsettling story, but also bad because it goes through the classic monster movie routines with no respect to character development or quality of story and using the clichés I game to hate so much like "Americans in spooky European country trying to communicate by adding an 'o' to every English word", "Americans looking for police and/or a phone and, lacking that, looking for a car or a gun", Deus ex Machina overload and so on.This is the second time I watch the film and, besides some scenes that I vaguely remembered, the rest of the movie was completely forgettable. In truth, with a little effort this could have been a decent movie. I don't get why they had to break it using such bad acting and such a silly script.
begob Not a fan of Cthulhu, but this engaged me by the end.But ... who cast that idiot as the lead? To be fair to the actor the early part of the film was poorly written, and he did have to carry most of the awful dialogue. Almost all of it reaction stuff, with loads of questions: Over here! Which way? C'mon! What the hell? Some actors don't need to say a word in those situations. The first scene in particular made me hate him, and I was tempted to give up. By the time we reached the house he'd settled down, and became an action man once he'd lost the irritating glasses - "I'm being chased, so I think I'll pause to push up my specs." Anyway, he was acted off the screen by the old exposition chap with the gravelly voice (RIP).The sound and movement of the fishumans was great. But the full length shots of Barbara were a bit coy, especially when she was hauled out of the pit - could have had an amazing silhouette there. I did get a good laugh out of the dangling arms.Overall it starts out cheap and nasty, but ends up camp and enjoyable.
princeps-suspiriorum A well acted little flick that manages to update its source material for the modern day while staying true to its core, Dagon is nevertheless let down by a script that vacillates for too long between Re-Animator style dark comedy and taking itself seriously. This becomes especially problematic as the film heads towards its climax, which feels mean-spirited and lazily resolved. Still, as Lovecraft adaptations go, Dagon remains one of the better ones, and it makes good use of its modest budget to provide a plethora of weird and entertaining visuals.Despite its uneven script, the movie remains enjoyable for most of its running time thanks to the efforts of the cast. However, it's definitely not for everyone, as the climax veers towards uncomfortable and poorly treated sexual violence.
