Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
Dana An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
garthlotel This is my favourite Greta Gerwig movie. The humour is wonderfully dark and dry and the story is a unique mix of college frat movie meets musical fantasy meets Clueless meets Heathers. It's hard to describe this film as it doesn't seem to fit any particular genre. But you will love Greta and her friends and you will delight in their quests.
Laiath What stood out to me about this movie is how hardly any characters were clichéd. I thought they were pretty unique in a lot of ways, and very unpredictable. I mean unpredictable in a good way, as in, you couldn't tell what they were going to say or do next, or how things would end up. Admirable treat in a movie of this genre. That was it, though. Nothing really funny or special, or particularly uplifting or depressing. Just an average movie. There was some pretty hard-to-believe stuff added to the story (to be satirical I guess), which didn't match the rest of the movie. I don't think it works to have normal kids living regular lives as your protagonists (however weird they may be) and make stupid stuff up to be critical of God knows what. If it's supposed to be a parody, then where do all the serious and philosophical conversations and the pretty real emotions fit?
paul_mcdonald_100 Damsels in Distress is awful for so many reasons but principally for a comedy script that isn't funny and multiple lousy performances.Greta Gerwig of course attracts something of a loyal following but she again turns in her usual irritating performance. While it could be pleaded the character of Violet is intended to be infuriating, and so the performance is intentionally irritating, as Gerwig gives exactly the same performance in every film she makes, we can only conclude the performer is to blame. Others around her (e.g. Analeigh Tipton as Lily, or Ryan Metcalf as Frank) do a reasonable job with the poor material, although Megalyn Echikunwoke as Rose cannot be forgiven for giving one of the worst performances ever on film. And just when you thought things could not get any worse, the film closes with two really bad dance sequences that kill stone dead any message about the wonders of dance which the film has tried to spin.Awful, simply awful.
museumofdave I found this perfectly gauged trifle a delight, a deadpan satire which deliberately keeps its targets muted, the four main characters not unlike something one might find in an 18th Century drawing room, chatting about inconsequentials, but in their own way attempting to drag some significance from a trivial life. How refreshing to see a film with young twenty-somethings not having to express themselves with solely with four-letter words or the dreaded "awesome" because they lack imagination; these folks actually have vocabularies! While no masterpiece by any means, this is a gentle look at maturation, a lightly barbed look at young women that keeps its claws drawn in
