A Disappointing Continuation

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

Ram Gopal Verma is the most maverick filmmaker we have seen in the recent decade. If he has made classics like Shiva,Satya,Company,Rangeela and Bhoot on one side he also has the power to make diassaters like Kaun,Jungle,Daud and Mast.Of late he has handled his director seat to some of his assistants who have more often than not given duds like Pyaar Tune Kya kiya and Road but it is obvious in these movies that Verma has directed many scenes. His penchant of making different movies also end up at times in making disastrous attempts of cinema. After a brilliant Bhoot,Darna Mana Hai is one of the biggest duds of the century. The story starts with a group of friends driving a cvar in what resembles a forest(the drive fascination which Verma has is irritatingly present in Daud,Road and in the entire Darna Mana hai) and the tyre breaks down. They sit down in a place and start telling super natural stories to each other. The first story is rather engrossing and kind of scary too.It is regarding about a married couple(Sohail Khan and Antara mali)who are on their way to honeymoon. The story ends with a supernatural ending. With the second story starts the idiocity of this terrible movie. It is about a fashion photographer Saif Ali Khan(who looks rather cool in a stubble) who resides in a hotel for a night. The hotel owner (Boman Irani) is a sick man who hates cigaratte. What follows next is really disgusting. The 3rd story ends all expectations regarding the movie. It is about a school teacher (Raghuvir Yadav) who beats up a girl for not doing homework. This story has a really ugly ending. This ends with the intermission and 3 of the friends are dead by now.(I bet half the audience would have died of boredom) The 4th story gives u laugh riot.It is about Shilpa Shetty, sanjay Kapoor and an apple seller Rajpal Yadav. The story is one of the most amazing piece of disgust ever written. It gives u enough time to laugh, scream(in disgust) and scratch ur head.I almost died laughing after watching this silly portion. The 5th story regarding Nana Patekar and the overhyped Vivek Oberoi is a bit better but by this time the audience have moved out of theatre. However the 6th story is a grand finale to the most idiotic film of the decade. In this story which is Verma's tribute to Midas touch's story Aftab and Isha Kopikaar are present. The audience who were still sitting in theatre expecting something good by now are sure to run away in the WORST story. The ONE-Ending is also a big big DUD.By the time the movie ends you will be surprised to see that you have actually survived the 2 hour 20 minutes totrure.Darna Mana Hai boasts of being different. But it is different just for the HECK of it.It is not the first movie which boasts of different stories.Hrishikesh Mukerjhee's brilliant flop but National Award winning debut film 'Musafir' also had 3 different stories. The movie had some brilliant performances by Dilip Kumar,Suchitra Sen and Kishore Kumar. After this movie there have been some movies which hade some episodes instead of just a single movie.raj Kapoor's biggest flop but still brilliant 'Mera Naam Joker' and A.Bhim Singh's 'Naya Din Nayi Raat' which had Sanjeev Kumar in 9 roles were other brilliant movies in this genre.Recently Raj Kumar Santoshi made 'Lajja' which also had 3 different storie.Although thses movies were good none of them were big hits.Darna Mana Hai although has 6 stories but needless to say it is the WORST of the lot.Actually it does not even come anywhere near these movies.Ina rotten film like this one does not expect much from the elad stars.Sohail Khan looks and smiles like Salman Khan but is still passable.Antara Mali is ok.Raghuvir Yadav gets on your nerves.Revathi was so-so.Saif Ali Khan is wasted.Boman Irani is irritaing,Nana Patekar is his usual eccentric,Vivek is as usual just ok,sanjay Kapoor looks like a clown.Shilpa Shetty is ok,Isha Kopikar has hardly anything to do.Sameera Reddy looks more like a tall and strong athlete than a heroine. With a husky voice and well toned biceps she looks more of a aman than a woman.Rajpal yadav is disgusting. But the worst performance is undoubtably by Aftab Shivdasani.he hams and eats the head of audience. The direction has stamp of Verma and is pathetic in general. Overall a HORRIBLE movie which will leave bad tase in the mouth if seen. A PATHETIC FILM.

There are some Producer directors who have established a track record in Bollywood-and Ram Gopal Varma is one of them. The problem with RGV is akin to a small restuarant that used to serve some good food and suddenly they have expanded and the food is not the same it used to be. You are attracted to the sleuth of big Stars and the Varma name but the movie starts with some teenagers who neither have a attention grabbing personality nor style. They are so absorbed in their stories around a fire they donot miss their freinds who get killed one at a time, donot bother to check on them-they have the same curiosity and compassion they would show for their friends who fail to return from the corner grocery store. After this miserable start we are treated to some subplots which we try to connect to the main story but you get frustrated, confused but not scared. A horror movie you expect to see some action and looks like the music preps you for it but after you have settled in your seat there is not even a generic ghost. Suffice to say this is let down from Varma, the only saving grace for Varma; he is not credited as the Director.

It is a wonderment that a movie of this stature could be made in Bollywood!!! Kudos to Ramgopal Varma and The First Time Director Prawaal Raman. The Movie is totally bizarre and hence very engaging. The Premise of Six friends telling each other stories on a dark, wintry night at lonely spot, the stories that follow, all keep our attention riveted. The stories range from the horrifying to unbelievable. All of the cast have given a wonderful performance. the ones that deserve special mention are Boman Irani, Saif Ali Khan, Nana Patekar, Shilpa Shetty, Raghuvir Yadav and Vivek Oberoi. One remains involved with the happenings mainly due to taut direction, background music and absence of songs(thank the director for that for that). The flow and the pace is fast and smooth. The climax needed more explanation. Thats IT!!! NOW go and watch the movie!!! It is definitely worth your time and money!!

Darna Mana Hai turned out to be a movie you can watch once. It is a ghost movie having 6 stories in one story. 7 youngsters are travelling in a car through an empty road late at night. Suddenly the car has a puncture and leads to 6 of them spotting a lantern in the forest and a cozy place where sone one apparently resides( it is a an open courtyard basically). So they light a fire and start saying ghost stories. The first of the 6 stories was pretty horrific featuring Antramali. One by one the youngsters go to the car and are murdered mysteriously. The second and third horror stories were more of comedies and the movie got less horrific after the initial 20 minutes. There are big bollywood stars featuring in the stories like Vivek Oberoi, Nana Patekar, Shipa Shetty, Saif Khan and many others as well. I was startled atleast 4 times in the movie and scared my friend in the process too. It was a movie which was not as good as I had expected it to be. Yet it is interesting and atleast it is innovative which is what I like about movies.
