Softwing Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Sarita Rafferty There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Edwin The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
851222 Greetings from Lithuania."Devil" (2010) is a great genre movie. Genre itself here is horror, but "Devil" should be classified more like a thriller / horror movie. What i liked about this movie in a first place was its present day take on a story, in a middle of usual business day, when suddenly something very unusual starts to happen in a usual place (and yes, broken elevator i think is a usual place). I was highly involved into this story. Characters here weren't highly presented, but its not the point. I loved Detective Bowden character, he was on spot and represented counterbalance to all the supernatural things that were going on. Overall, "Devil" is a superb genre flick. It is a horror thriller mystery combination that will glue you to the screen for all its running time keeping you guessing and feel very bad about the idea to get stuck in a elevator. And according to this movie idea, it can happen anywhere. If you like these kind of movies, "Devil" is a must see. Great genre movie.
devvymonkey While I was watching this I would have given it a higher rating. It was enthralling in the moment. The filming, directing and most of the acting was well done. This movie had so much potential. It could have been a great thriller or horror, but it got confused (note: not confusing, confused). The writing needed to move away from Shyamalans formula and find it's own voice. Also they needed to set their own rules and stick to them! (spoilers below)1. Devils Reach. They reveal that these people have records, they are all guilty of something, this is why they are in the elevator. What about the guy that commits suicide? He said something about hearing the devils footsteps or something, but it held no real purpose other than to get the detective there. There are plenty of other ways to get him there that could have fit (such as it's his job) while sticking to the idea that the devil is punishing these people.2. The People. Each person has a different crime and they all deserved to die? They weren't even serious offenses, only one guy actually killed. This devil needs to up its goals. If you are going with the idea that they are being punished for their sins (which I've never understood since the devil should love people with sins, so maybe these guys just weren't bad enough and needed to be punished for half a**ing it?) then they should have heavier ones.3. Devil Reasoning. When first asked the security guard says that none of them will live because the devil will kill them all. Then later they need to see themselves for what they are to live, basically if they accept their sins the devil won't kill them. Pick one! Either this devil is having some fun and killing people or it's helping them to accept the crimes they have committed. Don't be wishy washy. 4. The Fiancé. Pointless. This character was only put in to explain why that guy had the tools. She's shown trying to figure out how to get into the building, then she just walks in the front door. The Front Door. The one that is supposed to be watched since the building is on lock down? Yes, that door. All the cops should be fired at this point. She explains the tools and that's it. 5. Non-Elevator Deaths. It is explained that each person in the elevator has something to atone for, some crime or sin, and yet non-elevator, non-criminals die. The suicide guy, maintenance guy and the security guard. It takes away from the whole idea that there's a reason to the elevator deaths, the order is not real so the rules no longer apply.6. Maintenance. A building of that size has one guy? Just one!?! And he's not even trained to know how to go down the shaft to perform maintenance? Yes the devil caused it so it didn't matter in the end, but he went down on a swing and couldn't coordinate himself to grab the walkietalkie. 7. Expositional Security Guard. You know, the guy that is there to explain things? The character whose purpose is to give reasoning to the devil that apparently has no reasoning? He seemed to be making up the rules, but he wasn't even a twist ending devil or anything that would make it make sense. He was just there to explain. Such a pretty decoration.8. The Ending. *Sigh* The biggest disappointment. Up till this point I was willing to forgive the other issues, to ignore the inconsistencies. This is the point where it changes from they're all going to die to self forgiveness and recognition beats devil. This is where it throws the religious undertones in your face like a heavy book. It wasn't a twist, it was the obvious road, it was the easy ending. There's no surprise. Instead they go after school special on you. If you have committed crimes or have sins, you can beat the devil by accepting your short comings and admitting to the truth. The only thing they were missing was the confession booth. Then the cop just forgives him. We don't even get a vengeance killing? No 'Surprise! The devil didn't really leave it just jumped ship!' The ending we got was an 'I forgive you'. It's okay Devil, I forgive you too.
Danii Disaster First of all, why would the devil waste his/her time trapping him/herself in a lift with a bunch of unremarkable humans? I mean, if the devil wanted to off these people for whatever reason, I'm sure s/he would have done it without having to resort to the lift charade. Are we really expected to believe that the devil has nothing better to do with his/her time, and can't find more creative ways to entertain him/herself? It was kind of obvious from the start who the supposed devil was, and the attack sequences were really tacky, so it wasn't a very engaging movie to watch. Not much suspense, stupid storyline, predictable.I kept falling asleep, so one word: borefest.
Ole Sandbaek Joergensen This is a tense little thriller/horror flick, some of the films M. Night Shamalan are involved with I like very much and others not so much. This one I like but it's not all the way up there on the scale, mainly because it could have been more, but it does okay. It's a strange flick not truly scary, but it kept me on the edge of my seat a couple of times, and it definitely keeps one guessing a lot of times. The scenery primarily takes place in one place or in one building, but it's interesting and even in small confined spaces you can have good acting, hidden/strange camera angles and good visual effects to set the right mood.
