I gave this film a 9 out of 10, because it was exactly what I expected it to be.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

I first seen this back in I think 1998 on TV when I was 8,
I remember liking it even then, then around 2001 seen it again on TV.Fast forward to 2018 and I still like this film, it's just as good as I remember it
because sometimes seeing films in your childhood and then in adulthood
differs.I just rented it recently from my library and I still love it.
On to the film, Mark Dacascos plays Toby Wong, from what I understand
he could possibly be a soldier that more or less volunteered
for the program to have a turbo drive device implanted in his chest
that gives him superhuman strength, speed and agility. But for him,
he is just a prototype, for we later learn there are others just like him in
cold storage. Obviously this is the work of a sinister corporation,( but the
version I have does not explain any further on that).
Kadeem Hardison plays Malik Brody a down on his luck singer who meets
Toby in a bar, as the bad guys track him, Malik and Toby flee the scene
and Malik must "Drive" him around town to stay one step ahead. This movie was a lot of fun, it's just non-stop action and laughs
from start to finish, and the late Brittany Murphy plays a small
roll too, mostly her is part is a comedic side kick for relief.Overall fun, action packed and re-watchable.
I give it a 7/10. I recommend it.

I really have no idea why so many people seem to think this film is any good at all. Mr Dacascos seems to be a fairly talented martial artist from the other films I've seen him in, although the premise of this film, which is very similar to Black Mask and Universal Soldier, means that every fight scene is sped up to make it look farcical. If the fights were done properly the film might be a little more watchable. The fighting scenes instead just become boring, repetitive and ridiculous. The hired killers chasing the protagonists are quite unpleasant buffoons, and one appears to be a tramp. Whilst he may be a decent scrapper, Mr Dacascos is certainly not a good actor. The film is more of a comedy than anything else and he really cannot pull this off. His costar Mr Hardison isn't too bad in this department, and Brittany Murphy appears halfway through the film to make it mildly entertaining for a few minutes. However, as quickly as she appears she is then subsequently dropped, and her fate left uncertain. In fact the film just sort of trundles to a halt, with a number of issues left unresolved. There is a hint that there may be a sequel but since it has been twelve years since this mess was made hopefully that will never happen. There is very little good to say about the whole thing. It could not look more like a straight to video film and there are much better examples of this genre around.

this martial arts/comedy is packed with fun. mark dacascos is just an excellent fighter and he should do more films similar to this one!! good story line and great fight scenes. one of my favourite films to date. the acting may not be Oscar winning but it sure is entertaining. the special effects are noting special with the explosions for example. i would recommend this to anyone who likes action and a bit of humour. its a good film. it starts of with probably the best fight scene in the whole movie but don't worry there are plenty of fight scenes right the way through it. kadeem provides the comedy for this film as he is always moaning. i'm going on too much so just watch it. maz

Although the American made martial arts films of Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal can be quite good, most American made martial arts films are cheap imitations of Van Damme and Seagal films. They are usually marred by several presumptions on the part of their producers, for instance, that martial arts are best appreciated as a sport - hence the overwhelming number of such films set in a professional fight world that doesn't happen to exist. The stars of these movies are usually champion fighters in some sport association or other, but, unfortunately, none of them know how to act. Finally, although Van Damme and Seagal know what the Hong Kong martial arts film is really all about, their cheap imitators haven't a clue; so we end up with what are really cheap imitations of Rocky, only with increased brutality and bloodshed, as well as increased cynicism - the producers of these films think kung fu is just a sport of ignorant thugs; of course, the term, "kung fu" actually means "discipline" (specifically, a kind of self-discipline), and has traditionally been respected as the physical culture of the educated. So I wasn't expecting very much from this film, although I did know Wang had made the cult sci-fi film, The Guyver, as well as an amusing, but very uneven, martial arts parody, Kung Fu Rascals. I still expected this to be an 'American' style martial arts film, that is, a cheap imitation Steven-Seagal-does-Rocky.What a pleasant surprise Drive is! This is the closest I've seen an American film get to the pace and skill of a Hong Kong action film. Director Wang and star Dascascos have clearly studied Jet Li films very carefully; they fashion a simple chase plot that is still complicated enough to allow for intelligence on the parts of the characters, the actors, and the audience, while at the same time providing enough time for some of the fastest, wildest fight stunts ever made in an American martial arts film. Further, the film has a strong cast - Dascascos demonstrates that he can act, and can do so with some charm, as well as a sense of humor (often so lacking in American martial arts films). The rest of the cast performs strongly yet they are careful not to distract from Dascascos at the center of the action. Finally, unlike many American martial arts films, the budgeting here is adequate enough to allow Wang to produce strong imagery underscored with elegantly crafted editing - what do I mean by that? I mean, it doesn't draw attention to itself, it allows us to savor the action, momentarily forgetting that we are watching a movie. On top of all this - it's just out-right fun.A very fast-moving action film, great stunts, great performances, well-made. It's a pity it didn't receive the notice it deserves when first released. When you find this, grab it; and spread the news - perhaps we can elevate this to cult status - it's well deserving of it.
