GazerRise Fantastic!
Murphy Howard I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
Gymnopedies Edward Scissorhands (played by Johnny Depp) is about a man who has scissors for hands. The film begins with a friendly Avon saleswoman Peg Boggs (played by Kathy Baker) who visits this abandoned mansion on the edge of the town and discovers Edward and she takes him home with her. From there on we Edward trying to fit in with the locals and discover the world that has been closed off from him. The film poignantly depicts Edwards early years through flashbacks of his past and how his 'owner' (played by Vincent Price) treated him. Edward becomes popular among the neighbors and are impressed by his adept hedge-trimming and hair-cutting skills. He begins to fall in love with the Boggs' beautiful teenage daughter Kim (played by Winona Ryder), despite her initial fear of him. Edward throughout the film expresses some sad utterances such as "I'm not finished" or "Hold me, I can't". When people don't understand something or somebody their feelings turn to that of fear, hatred and envy and this sadly applied to Edward because he was socially inept and some characters such as Jim, Kims boyfriend, takes advantage of him. Unfortunately as the movie progresses we witness Edwards popularity dissipate and we see this once popular and respected member of the community driven back to where he came from. Kim leaves Edward alone forever more because wants to remember him the way he was in her youth. Edward unable to understand the harshness of people and unable to fit in returns to the one place where he felt wanted and comfortable, on his own. It is ultimately an extremely poignant story about a man's rise and demise and who only ever wanted to fit in. Edward Scissorhands explores themes such as isolation, loneliness and self-discovery. It is not just some whimsical fairy tale, under the surface it is full of metaphors and subtext that represents or portrays society. It is essentially a dark tale about a man who only wanted to fit in. It is just hauntingly poetic.
Benedict02 Considering the complex character of Edward Scissorhands being based of a sketch done by Burton, Caroline Thompson does a wonderful job developing the story, with a character that hurts anyone who gets to close. The film features the first collaboration between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, Depp even admits to crying the first time he read the script. The character is loved by many, mainly for Depp's tear-jerking performance. Despite his exterior look he is the sweetest being ever "made." I also feel sympathetic for the character knowing you can't help him, you feel as isolated as the Inventor's castle on the mountain. Edward and his stark contrasts to "normal" people is also presented through the houses; Edward dark and isolated from everyone else where all the rest are colourful and interactive with each other.Winona Ryder was Depp's real life girlfriend at the time, she declined a role in "The Godfather Part III" (1990) to take the role of Kim Boggs, the love between Kim and Edward is heart-warming and one of the main themes of the movie.Every time i view the film i always end up crying and it's also due to Danny Elfman's superb soundtrack.Burton does a fantastic job directing his most well known film, he also includes his childhood hero Vincent Price "The Inventor."Burton is an iconic visionary director and marvellous storyteller and it has never been more evident than in his most recognisable picture.
Rissa From one humble Christian's perspective...Language level: 3 out of 5 At least one utterance of high-level profanity. Most of the movie seems fairly clean, except for a couple of words.Sexual level: 2 out of 5 Some sexual innuendo throughout. One woman removes her clothes seductively and tries to tempt.Violence level: 2 out of 5 Edward is constantly snipping things accidentally. There is a fight that leads to death.Personal Thoughts: Not as scary as one might think. It's more of a creepy comical movie than it is actually scary.
CarolusRex I'm not going to write any spoilers here or anything related to the story. I'm just going to say - I am extremely lazy when it comes to creating accounts on sites and writing reviews which is why I almost never do it, but this time I just had to. I had to make account on this site just to write my opinion on this movie - or let me say, on this wonderful piece of art. Opinions are opinions, a lot of people won't agree, but I'm just going to say this - this movie is the best thing I have ever seen in my life. I never liked watching movies much, but I started to a couple of months ago. I watched a lot of them recently, ranging from comedy to horror, and I remembered this one. I found out about Edward Scissorhands a long time ago, but never really thought of giving it a try. These days I had some free time, so I was like why not? And it was the best decision I've ever made. This movie is just beautiful. Edward's character grew so much on me, and I can't even explain how I feel every time I replay the ending or turn on Danny Elfman's magical soundtrack. I watched the movie yesterday, and I've been thinking about it since then, I just can't get it off my mind! I've never liked something so much before, not a movie, a book, a video game, anything. This movie is a masterpiece, I won't say anything about its story and motives, because everyone should watch it and see for themselves. I want to watch it over and over again, I don't want it to ever end. It's like it became a part of me. Thank you Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and everyone else who took part in making this beautiful thing.
