Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

I skipped through the movie because it was in Portugese and not dubbed in English. Now this would not be a problem, if the whole movie was in Portugese or the whole movie in English, but the narration is in English and the People talk Brazilian, like it's some kind of documentation, but then again, even in documentation Portugese people get dubbed and get an English voice. If the whole movie was in Portugese I would just watch with English subtitles and would understand that they haven't even tried to dub the movie because Brazilian people talk so fast and it's not made for the English language. But it is not the case and I don't want to listen to br br br and hue hue and let someone explain me what is going on in English. The plot might be good but I will pass on this one. This is my first review please upvote.

This is just the review for the first one, the sequel is a review for a later time. The film was thoroughly entertaining and interesting with a good story that never thins. This film is simple and very enjoyable with plenty of satisfying action and even great satisfying dialogue. The emotions are also a strong presence making this film overall great. This film shows the strength one has to have and the hardships one has to endure to become that of a bope officer, this is just one of the memorable scenes in the film. Anyone who is a fan of crime films and don't mind action and a good story then you are sure to enjoy this film.

I came in to ELITE SQUAD knowing absolutely nothing about it apart from good word of mouth on IMDb . It's a Brazilian film and is it possible to be reminded of Brazil without CITY OF GOD being mentioned ? In fact the whole opening sequence is very similar both aesthetically and structurally as Fernando Meirelles 2002 film with a flashback opening set in the slums of Rio Thankfully this is a little bit more than an urban cop thriller that could easily have been set in any inner city of the United States . Amnesty International isn't too keen on South American police squads that sometimes cross the line in to becoming death squads ridding the streets of " undesirable elements " . In other words fascism sometimes rears its very ugly head and perhaps mindful of this the producers including Harvey Weinstein has made a film where the good guys tend to bend the rules for the greater good . It might be fascism but it's all done for the greater good and the eponymous elite squad bending the rules are morally stand up characters who are incorruptible and never brutalise an innocent person . Like so many films with these type of brutal crusaders with a police badge one wonders how the characters would react if just for once they caught a totally innocent man That said it's not a film that paints the ordinary flatfoot of Rio in a good light . The everyday policemen are either corrupt or have an abdicratic attitude to their work . What stops the film attaining true greatness is the fact the first third of the film takes up too much time showing the often banal apathetic routine role of the police . The film also has a scathing cynical attitude to the bourgeois liberal middle class who are often hypocrites . One wonders if this is a misanthropic point rather than a political statement ? Of course the film doesn't suggest that if all drugs were legalised then perhaps the drug gangs would become somewhat disenfranchised In summary ELITE SQUAD is a gritty hard hitting police thriller where the audience are asked to side with violent people almost entirely down to the fact that they're principled . One feels slightly uneasy as to what we're asked but it's well made enough to make me seek out the sequel

Tropa de Elite plays out like a fascist recruitment video. My main problem with this film comes from its exploitation of a real world problem, and creating a loud, violent action movie, and welding it to a pro-authority message. The film is shot in a manner similar to other recent Brazilian crime fair, but instead of the bursting intensity of City of God, the directors shoot in drab colours, with a drab lead, expounding a far from subtle, and rather sinister, social message.Although its quick, chopping editing should suggest urgency, we are left with a barely passable story of characters strewn together, in a bumbling action thriller.
