(Plot) A bored wife wants to branch out a little bit, and experience the heights of sexual pleasure, and go where she's never been before. This was actually fairly tame in my opinion, despite a few standout scenes. In all honesty, I didn't find Emmanuelle to be all that attractive, and frankly. She was rather uninteresting in my opinion. It does have some lesbianism sequences, with one scene in a squash court that is very sensual and erotic. It also has a pretty uncomfortable rape sequence and some sex scenes on an airplane, but I found the whole thing to be trivial for the most part and not as explicit as I was lead to believe. We also get the ambiguous ending with Emmanuelle's sexual desires beginning to escalate more and more, but there are a lot of lulls in between. Sylvia Crystal is OK, but not as attractive or dynamic as she is made out to be. She was rather boring and naive when it came to a lot of things. Her story just wasn't all that interesting to be frank with you.Final Thoughts: I've got the first one out of the way. I'm not too inspired to check out the sequels, though. I inevitably will end up doing so. But this just didn't interest me all that much. For a soft-core erotica film, you can do better4.5/10

Although not quite as good as it's sequel, "Emmanuelle: Joys of A Woman," this film made Dutch actress/model Sylvia Kristel an international star, and changed the way sex was presented in mainstream film forever after. Filmed in exotic Thailand, this is the engaging story of a beautiful young woman's sexual awakening, (or sexual corruption, depending on how you look at it.) Emmanuelle is the 19 year old wife of a wealthy diplomat, a man older than her, and with much more worldly experience than his innocent young bride. Jean is proud to claim that Emmanuelle is not his possession, and that he would like nothing more than for her to be free to explore her own sexuality. However when Emmanuelle falls in love and runs off with a female friend, her husband doesn't deal with it as well as he thought. Emmanuelle, played by the exquisite Sylvia Kristel, is surrounded by people eager to teach her all about eroticism and sensuality. There are the bored, jet set wives who spend their days lounging by the pool in tiny swimsuits and gigantic 70's sunglasses. There is the young girl, Marie-Ange, forever sucking lolli-pops, who teaches Emmanuelle not to be ashamed of masturbation, (in a very hot scene,). There is the bitchy Arianne, forever trying to seduce the younger Emmanuelle. And finally there is the older man, Mario, who is the catalyst, the man who "breaks" Emmanuelle, through a series of sometimes disturbing sexual games, re-inventing her into the sexually liberated woman that we see in the numerous sequels. And for those only familiar with the sequels, this is an important one to see, as this is where Emmanuelle comes into being. It is quite fascinating to watch this character develop from a wide eyed innocent, into a free-thinking sexual being, a woman not afraid to enjoy what men have enjoyed since the dawn of time. The erotic scenes are tasteful, and never go beyond soft-core. "Emmanuelle" is an erotic film with a lot of class and style. There is a particular scene which has been cut from many new DVD releases; a violent rape scene in an opium den. The scene is important, as it is a pivotal scene in Emmanuelle's "education." It is the scene that breaks her, and makes her realize that sex is not something to be feared. In the scene directly following that rape, she is brought to a Thai boxing match, where her body is the prize for the winning fighter. This sexual encounter could have been a rape also, but because she is not afraid, there is no rape, just a consensual act that she derives great pleasure from. Classic 70's theme, more controversial today than it was then. This is a must for fans of cult and erotic films. And if you enjoy this, seek out "Emmanuelle 2;" it's even better!

The French love Emmanuelle. Apparently Emmanuelle is the most popular movie ever shown in France. Yet another reason to doubt the taste of the French, if you ask me.I like me a good naked lady movie as much as the next guy, but even so Emmanuelle annoys me plenty. It's dreary, plot less, pretentious and more than a little sick. What Emmanuelle does have is Sylvia Kristel, who was 21 when it was made. Kristel is a Dutchwoman who is said to have an I.Q. of 160. This actually could be true. I've seen her in television interviews, and she speaks perfectly grammatical English, with only a slight accent. Emmanuelle was shot in French, and apparently Kristel's French is virtually flawless too. She can't act any better than Daniel Day-Lewis's right foot, but she's certainly a gifted linguist. And beautiful? Forget about it. Take the beauty quotients of Geena Davis and Demi Moore, add them together, and multiply by 5. Plus, she's sort of childlike, which is wierdly appealing in the star of a sex movie.

I remember watching Emmanuelle with all my friends when I was 13 years old and at the time it was so hot. Now years on and I still love it. Basically, it's definitely not for teenagers. (I know I was under aged when I watched it, so there's no point in pointing that out) But for anyone who's into older movies, Sylvia Kristel or sex, I so suggest you watch Emmanuelle. Granted the story hardly makes any sense and the picture looks a little pale, but my friends and I enjoy an evening watching it. The story is pretty much about an attractive young woman who seeks comfort in the arms of men she hardly knows. That's really the whole story, but my point in watching it is because the sex scenes are not bad at all. It'll give you ideas on what to do next to spark up your relationship.
