Amateur movie with Big budget

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

I had very little expectations to the movie, as I hadn't even heard about it prior to stumbling upon it by sheer luck on Netflix. I decided to watch it solely because Michael Jai White starred in it.And it turned out that this action flick was actually rather entertaining. Sure, the storyline was generic and something that definitely has been seen before in other action movies. But the combination of the storyline, the action, the acting, and the cast, then the end result really worked out as an entertaining action movie with that late 1980's feel that action movies had back then. The story, in all its simplistic glory, is about a an ex-marine (played by Michael Jai White) who travels to Brazil, where he takes up fighting the Yakuza in the slums of Brazil, because the Yakuza attacked her sister and left her for dead. There is a lot of action and fighting throughout the course of "Falcon Rising", and I will say that the action sequences and the fight scenes were quite nicely choreographed and executed on the screen. Which only added to the enjoyment of the movie, of course."Falcon Rising" is definitely worth the time of watching if you are a fan of old school action movies.

Although I normally like a B-movie with Michael J White, this is absolutely not one of them. Bad acting, bad directing and camera-work, a thin cookie cutter plot and a disappointing White. Normally White will deliver some great fighting scenes despite a terrible movie and that normally makes them worth watching for me, but this one was way below what I expect from him... he looked stiff and even the 'boss fight' wasn't entertaining for a second. And when White is in the same movie as Lateef Crowder and they're opposite of each other a viewer would expect at least one awesome fight, but the director even skipped that part. This movie was a waste of my time. With 3 stars out of 10 I'm being pretty generous.

"Falcon Rising" is an enjoyable action film with outstanding fight choreography and reasonably complex characters. It is a relatively low-budget (essentially) direct-to-video potboiler and is not in the same league as "Spectre" or "Furious Seven." The plot is fairly thin and it's not too terribly difficult to predict which characters will eventually be revealed as villains. What it has is an abundance of competently choreographed and adroitly executed fight scenes and fairly consistent quality in scenes involving unarmed combat (including capoeira), knives, swords, improvised police batons and firearms. The scenes are shot in a way that showcases his skills and those of his adversaries. Michael Jai White (Chapman) may not win any awards for his dramatic skills, but his martial arts skills are top-notch and he does a credible job with the dialogue he is given. Lighting is fairly good. Camera-work suffers from noticeable over-dependence on jiggly-cam shots, particularly in shots that should be rock solid. There is not much in the way of a moral or character growth. There are no car chases and no romance angle. It's shot in Rio de Janeiro, but we don't see much of the city. The script has a few too many coincidences, contrivances and tired tropes, but the script is really just there to provide an excuse for the fight scenes. Chapman is haunted by memories of his past which are shown in brief series of memory flashes that could probably be less frequent and about a quarter as long in duration. However, there are some nice touches as well. It opens with what has become a ritual for Chapman that is embellished with a few innovative details that make it particularly disturbing. The scene is bookended with a symbolic action that is eloquent in its simplicity. As a modest-budget potboiler, it gets the job done. The fight scenes are done well enough that one can overlook weaknesses in other areas.

This movie is not a cheap flick by any means. For some reason, people (myself included) seem to have been expecting a less than interesting B movie... well, it wasn't. Kind of like a short but satisfying Marvel comic. I really enjoyed watching this. Sure, it's produced with a small budget, but it does not come across that way at all. It was well put together, the story was coherent; and the acting was decent, as well as the character development. So that by the end of the movie, I was thinking to myself: "Wat? They're ending this on a cliffhanger... damn, now I want to see what happens next."So yes, this movie is well worth the watch. Enjoy it ;)
