He works in for London Diamonds, and he's a reliable staple in the building—no one would ever suspect he'd do anything wrong. One day, he approaches Demi Moore—whose British accent isn't nearly as adorable or believable—and asks if she wants to be a part of a robbery he's planning. She's the only female executive and doesn't get the credit she's due, so he figures she's angry enough to take what she's earned.Let's face it, without Michael Caine, this would be a mediocre heist movie. You might not even be rooting for the leads. But Michael Caine is in the movie, so you've got someone completely likable and charming to root for. While most heist movies are filmed in a lightweight style, with flashy cuts, upbeat music, and bright colors, this one is on the darker side. It's set in the sixties, so director Michael Radford filmed in deep, saturated colors and reflected the gloomy weather of London by using lots of darks and grays. It's a new and welcome change to the heist genre, and it makes all the difference in turning Flawless into a classy film.

carbuff In my opinion, this is Demi Moore's best movie ever. I really wasn't crazy about watching this film, but I needed a compromise to satisfy four different people, all with different tastes. It was a somewhat complex Venn diagram, but this proved a perfect solution and a very pleasant surprise. To begin, this is not really a thriller, but falls perfectly into the crime drama classification. There is no violence or even any significant threat of it throughout the movie (except for one small part where you know Michael Caine isn't really serious--that's as close to a spoiler as I'm going to get). There is also little true action, it's really a drama. If you are under around 45 years old, I have some reservations about recommending this movie, because it will probably seem too slow. It is a throwback to movies from a time gone by, and while I watch and enjoy plenty of modern, R-rated, pulse-pounding productions, I really wish there were a lot more of these kinds of well-made, old-fashioned, good, clean films still being made. Once I was alone again, I decided to make it a long night and watched two very good modern cynical anti-hero type films, and after watching this film earlier, I felt a bit dirty. There might, after all, be something to recommend about some of the old-time values depicted in this movie. Just a thought.

filmalamosa This film held my interest and since I am 55 appealed to my nostalgia also. I guessed the minute I saw all the diamonds were gone how Hobbs (Michael Caine) did it. And at that point I had to suspend disbelief that 1) the detectives working on it would not have thought of the sewers or 2) the sewers them selves would have been guarded in some way (catch basins etc...).In South Africa the miners were searched daily on leaving work including what a proctologist normally does. The sewers would have been protected if the company spent the money to put "foot thick reinforced steel" around all the walls.I also found weak the argument that Hobbs wife would cause such passion in a 60+ year old man 15 years after his wife's death. Then there is the dangling question about the 100 million and would that not have been watched somehow. Also I presume the large diamond that Caine sucked up out of the toilet came up out of the sewer...nothing else makes sense.Well considering what crap (pun intended)that comes out of Hollywood these days this movie surely deserves a 5. I was fearful that Michael Caine's motive would be that his dead wife was a black South African but fortunately this piece of PC stuff was not injected. It is injected in one of John Le Carre's or Graham Greene's books...(Sorry thankfully forgot the name of it).If you are 55 like myself you will enjoy the movie.

blanche-2 "Flawless" from 2007 is filled with the "bling" of not only diamonds, but of Michael Caine and Demi Moore, the stars of this caper movie.The story starts in the present day with the elderly Laura giving an interview about female executives of the past. She shows the interviewer an absolutely huge diamond and tells her story.Her story begins in London at London Diamonds, the largest supplier of diamonds in the world, where Laura (Moore) has a good position but is constantly passed over for promotion into the upper echelon. One day, the janitor, Hobbs (Caine) tells her that she's going to be fired. She doesn't believe him but finds out by snooping around that it's true.Hobbs wants her to get the codes to the vault, which are changed weekly. He is then going to enter the vault, fill his thermos with small diamonds, which the company probably won't even miss, and leave. He is going to cut her in.The next day the executives, including Laura, are called down to the vault. I'll leave it at that, but that was a pretty big thermos.Really excellent film with a charming, subtle performance by Caine as Hobbs and Moore as the unflappable, cool, beautiful Laura, a career girl at a time when that was much more unusual than it is today.The story will keep you wondering and intrigued up to the very last frame. Highly recommended. I originally watched this because Nathaniel Parker of Inspector Lynley Mysteries has a role. I'm glad I did.
