Mark Holton gives nothing less than the performance of a lifetime in this excruciatingly intense study of the infamous serial killer. Director Clive Saunders, working from his own insightfully stunning script, creates a true atmosphere of foreboding and dread and does not flinch from the true horror of the story he has to tell. Shot on location in Altadena, California, this is a technically superior low budget film and there is nary a sign that money was a problem at any point in the film. The incredible, disgusting, and repellent nature of one man's monstrousness is depicted beautifully. Holton seems to inhabit Gacy, become him, and expose him in all his unholy ugliness. It is hard to imagine anyone doing what he does in this motion picture. Certainly, others have attempted to portray this dark creature but no one has inhabited Gacy's very soul and made us stare helplessly into the abyss the way this incredible actor does in this overwhelming portrait of John Wayne Gacy. The Academy once again should be ashamed that Holton didn't receive the nomination he deserved, for this is beyond Oscar caliber work. This is total brilliance and so true to life it's disturbing and haunting in its sheer raw power.

I decided to give this movie a whirl, only because I had just recently learned about John Gacy, a real 30 person serial killer from the 1970's. Bad idea. The film seems to glorify the excessive amount of bugs under Gacy's house, rather than any sort of character development or plot movement. To my surprise, this movie even lacked a gruesome murder scene. The only violent part was Gacy thrusting a person's head in the water. The whole time it rambles on about Gacy taking a kid and putting him in his little house den, then the next kid, then the next kid, (x15). Seemingly no attempt was made by Saunders to engage, or attach the viewers to the characters; leaving this movie tough to watch for the wrong reason.

This movie implies some grisly violence following homosexual activities. And to many a dismay, there is no scenes of rape or even an execution finale. Nevertheless, GACY is worth a gander. The telling of one of America's most prolific serial killers, John Wayne Gacy. The monster kept his secret by being a model citizens in his suburban Chicago neighborhood. He was know to perform as a clown at hospitals and any place he was asked. He also provided work for desperate boys and young men. That was a giveaway leading to his downfall. Who knew of the horrors transpiring in his modest home, where bodies rotted in the crawlspace. Thirty brutal murders were traced back to Gacy with most of the bodies found beneath his house and some in the Des Plains River. It is estimated that Gacy picked up over 2000 men and boys. The cast includes: Charlie Weber, Tom Waldman, Kenneth Swartz, Jeremy Lelliot, Edith Jefferson, Joleen Lutz and Joe Roncetti.
