I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.

This movie has some good bones but what's in between isn't that great. The dialog and situations could have been funnier. A Manhattan writer gets laid off and has to go back home to New Jersey for a while. The cast is funny and likable especially the supporting cast. Annette Benning does well as the mother with impulse control problems. Matt Dillon is always a great comedic actor and he plays Annette's boyfriend. Kristin Wiig is good but her character she plays isn't terribly sympathetic or lovable. Darren Criss of Glee plays a lodger in Annette's Ocean City home and sings a bit.The contrast of the culture difference between arty Manhattan and Ocean City NJ is funny and could have been played up more.Overall worth one watch for the cast but it is a little lacking in laughs.

A preposterously fun movie, if you're prepared to give yourself to the ridiculousness of it. It's like Atlantic City, really, in that if you take it seriously, you'll be somewhere between disappointed, mildly repulsed and deeply depressed. If, on the other hand, you decide, well that's just NUTTY, let's roll with it, you'll have a good time. Benning and Wiig are great, and you have to admire Benning's willingness to embody the big hair. You can totally see how the movie is going to turn out, but there are some pleasurable little surprises on the way. Synopses are somewhat pointless: it's about rediscovering joy, by going back to New Jersey. See, I told you it was ridiculous.

I just saw this on FX tonight and was surprised at how good this film is. I think there is a lot more to the film than the other reviews suggest. It is a quirky little film with a great cast and a wonderful script.Without wanting to give too much away, the entire film is an interesting take on the wizard of oz. The performances were brilliant all round, including the really small bit parts. Matt Dillon and Annette Benning steal the show at times but Kristen Wiig gives a really credible performance as Imogene. The direction is great, editing seamless. There are a few predictable moments in the film but overall it is still a good watch. It really is a good film for a Friday or Saturday night in.

Imogene's life is in complete disarray. Her love interest has left, and her status isn't what it once was, she also steals. She moves back in with her family for a while, horrified to learn that her father isn't dead she was told. She meets a man named Lee, who not only helps give Imogene's life meaning again, but helps her search for her father's presence as well. I like Kristen Wiig. I liked her on SNL, and I enjoy her in movies. This was quite a change of pace for her, and while this movie is flawed, I must give Wiig a lot of credit for having the determination. It's a bit quirky and sentimental, but I actually enjoyed a lot of this movie. Your enjoyment of this movie may depend on how much you can relate to the selfishness of Kristen Wiig. If you can't tolerate her self absorbed character, you might have a miserable experience. If you manage to get into the character, I think you'll have a decent time with this movie. You can be renowned as much as possible, but if you aren't truly happy with your life, all the fame & exposure isn't gonna do squat for your happiness. When Imogene gets bailed out of jail, and is asked to sum up her experience, she says "disappointing" that's how much she is pining for happiness & adventure in her life. It's a decent character study. Kristen Wiig gives a great performance. It was neat to watch her evolve from prissy to a human being. Her character goes through a major transformation in the second half, and I thought Wiig did a tremendous job. Annette Bening is very good as the outlandish mother. Matt Dillon steals many scenes that he's in with his character. Darren Criss does a great Backstreet Boys impression. I thought his chemistry with Wiig was cute. Overall, this is quite imperfect, but I do have to give it credit. It definitely kept my attention throughout. It's worth a watch6.4/10
