Actuakers One of my all time favorites.
MoPoshy Absolutely brilliant
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Tayyab Torres Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
tdrish First off, let me say this: I absolutely love the Bobcat! He cracked me up way back in the 80's with his earlier work in the Police Academy films. Since then, he's done some outrageous comedies, with long time friend Robin Williams, such as Shakes The Clown. By the time the 2010's came in, it was obvious that he wanted to be known as something much more then the class clown. He wanted to be somebody. And he did by, simply put, making the type of films most didn't have the balls to make. This is why I have a deep passion for independent films. They're not under the pressure of big shot corporations trying to tell you what you can and can't do to make your movie big. And in God Bless America, he comes out with all guns blazing...literally. The story, in short, goes like this: a man lives by himself next door to a family that is keeping him awake at night. He has visions of shooting them all down . Possibly even fighting depression, it helms the standard "ready to blow" kind of guy, a walking timebomb where even the slightest trigger may set him off. After losing his job, just because he did something...(nice)....he contemplates commiting suicide. ( I put nice in parentheses because I personally consider it creepy and maybe even a form of harassment, however, the job I currently work at says it is okay to do so. You will have to watch it to know what I am talking about.) Matters really get worse when he is diagnosed with a brain tumor. With nothing left to lose, he decides to take matter in his own hands, with an unlikey aid as a partner in crime, and goes on a killing spree. Who do they kill? You name it. Mean spirited people, the guy taking up two parking spaces with his car, uncaring celebrities, the homophobic activists, he even offs off a suspected pedophile. The films underlying message is strong and clear...he's just fed up with the direction that America is headed. I do stand by the way one would feel about all this, I just wouldn't go so far as to turn to crime to get my point across. I grew up in a time without the internet, without wifi, without all the technology around us today. A simple time. Times are not so simple anymore, and this film demonstrates a Natural Born Killers for a new generation perhaps. I grew up in a time where people seemed to care more for other people, and as time went on, we seem to disconnect ourselves further and further, becoming unsensitive to the people around us. There's even talk about them leaving for France. In a sense, he just targets the people he feels have absolutely no right to live. The people who matter, you may be safe...for the moment. Has American society really sank to new lows? And if so, how low can it possibly go, before someone may really snap just like Joel in this film? I know. I may have overthought the movie. Then again, with all the outbreaks of violence that is happening at alarming rates in our American culture, you just can't shake the feeling that this all may not be a bad dream after all. 8 out of 10 stars. Great job, Bobcat...you keep on trucking!
Reno Rangan Well, I did not expect it to be this good, even after knowing it was praised by many. From the writer, director of 'World's Greatest Dad'. Another black comedy and this even better. About an ordinary middle aged divorcée who hates everything around him, but could not do anything about it. One day when he got fired from his job, followed by discovering he has a tumor, he thinks to put an end his life right away. But then decides to do cleanup the society before his time comes up. Hence begins the path of violence, later a young woman joins him and how long it all goes was briefed.Seems very familiar, but still worked so good. It's not your 'Bonnie and Clyde' or 'Pretty Poison'. In fact, you can drag as many titles as you can, but still it is quite simple and entertaining. Obviously predictable, including the main twist and several scenes, but the rhythm of the narration was great, keeps us hooked to it for the way it was filmed. It's not about the moral science. It is pretty much a confused or misunderstood situation based theme, especially the conclusion clears out that. So if you don't care anything about those things, particularly in a film, then it is for you.Unfamiliar faces, but they both in the lead were excellent. The same film with some popular stars would have made a better headline and collection. Not seen quite a nice B film like this in the recent time. I got what I wanted from a film. Especially for a small film like this its exemption in a few areas due to the tight budget, but this film did not have any trouble, just amazing. Yeah, a well made film, from writing to direction, performances, this is a decent hidden gem of its kind.7/10
loganholley I've known about this movie for a long time. I'm not going to go into any major backstory here, but I do remember looking through a magazine one day in 2011 (or so), and reading a review for it that was slightly positive. Reading said review, I was intrigued with the premise of a man who's had enough of stupidity... but only got to see the film tonight.I'm going to be honest here: it was not the masterwork you'll see some people say it is, but for what it was, I liked it. With a premise like this, the overall execution could go one of two ways: 1) A movie that tries to be considered "edgy", has little fun with itself, tries to be smart, but only ends up being mind-numbing dumbness, and takes itself far too seriously... OR, 2) A movie that has fun with itself, is funny, and strays away from trying to seem "cool" or "hip", all while being intelligent and bringing up valid points and issues. While I am glad to say that God Bless America went with the latter, that surely doesn't mean it's not flawed... because it is.Before I get into that, allow me to tell you what I actually enjoyed here. First of all, it's funny! While I rarely consistently laugh during Comedy movies, the first 10 minutes or so had me laughing pretty hard! I don't know too much about Dark Humor, but if you ask me, the Director/Writer of this film did quite a grand job. The Commentary in play here was also really intelligent, and actually makes EXCELLENT points about American Society. The acting was great, ESPECIALLY from the 2 leads (both of which I'd never heard of until the credits began to roll). Also, speaking of the 2 lead characters, they were pretty interesting. Are they the best in all of Cinema? Uh... why would you think that? Absolutely not... BUT, as characters, they were pretty well written, and you can sort-of (SORT-OF) get behind why they're doing something so terrible. The story was also interesting... but I'll get into that in a bit here. Now for my 2 flaws I had with this movie. While you can kick it around, ruff it up, nitpick it, say it's got loads more than 2 flaws all you want, I only managed to find 2 flaws. The first out of the 2 flaws would have to be some of the ways the story was told. Throughout the film, I had this feeling that anything major that was going to happen was told through exposition, glaring through a television at one point or another. There's a bit of the story that, though I saw it coming from the beginning, should have been shocking, like a piece that you never considered until it popped up... but I didn't feel as shocked as I could have been because of the way the filmmaker decided to let that information out to the viewers. My second flaw: the ending. Again, no spoilers, BUT... the ending kind of kept me hanging. After watching the film, I did connect the ending to a bit of dialogue from earlier which perfectly foreshadowed it... but even then, it just felt cheap. Did it make sense? Yes, but sometimes the thing that makes the most sense isn't always the most satisfying, even in cases where you SHOULDN'T be satisfied and you know it. I guess this is more of a nitpick than a legitimate flaw, considering this film in general, but I don't consider it to be a nitpick you can just wipe off your shoulders and forget about.Overall, God Bless America is an interesting film. Flawed, yes, but at the same time, it also manages to reach for the fruit of intelligence. I get that this isn't a film everyone will like, because of an inconsistent tone (which I, personally, didn't notice at all) and such. For what it is, I liked it.
pbosleyg5 You know what I hate? People who are offended by this movie - I believe they might be the kind of people that end up dead in this incredible film. This probably the most perfectly crafted film ever created. It is brilliant - from the writing to the final edit, I have nothing but rave reviews. The music is awesome, the acting is superb, and the symbolism is subtle and powerful. I find this film cathartic! When I am having one of those days where I hate the world, watching God Bless America makes me feel better. I like to think that somewhere out there, Frank and Roxie are taking care of another jerk. To the genius writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait - this may not be your most popular film, but this could be your most important and meaningful film. Very well done sir. I just watched this movie for the millionth time and given recent events in the news, (the mass shooting in Orlando and the reaction by religious groups) the message of God Bless America couldn't be more relevant. Some of you may think this movie advocates violence - but I think the real message is "don't be a dick." Wish more people got it.
