Aedonerre I gave this film a 9 out of 10, because it was exactly what I expected it to be.
Keeley Coleman The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Hattie I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Celia A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
bowmanblue 'Guest House Paradiso,' or, as was added later on the video box, 'The Bottom Movie.' I've been a fan of 'Bottom' (and before that 'The Young Ones') ever since it first crawled onto our televisions screens. So, like many, I was happy that the hideous Richie and Eddie had made it onto the big screen. I remember back in 1999 when it came out that it only received a Luke-warm reception, but I saw it anyway. My reaction – it just left me a bit cold.It's not a 'Bottom' movie. The characters, although basically identical to the Richie and Eddie that we know and love, have different surnames. It would be a bit simplistic to say that the movie failed on account of that one minor point, but, for some reason, I can't really think of anything else.Guest House Paradiso was not a commercial or critical success at the Box Office. I decided to watch it again because I enjoyed re-watching the series recently. I was surprised when I saw online how well-received it actually was. However, even from a second viewing over fifteen years later, I still didn't 'get it.' And I don't know why. Guest House Paradiso has everything that bottom has: the characters, the gross-out humour, the slap-stick violence and the overall feel of Bottom. Yet it still didn't do it for me. Perhaps I enjoyed seeing Bottom in 'smaller doses.' The half hour runtime of an average TV episode seemed just right. Maybe I found that stretching the concept out for an hour and a half was too much? Yes, there are funny bits and I did smile. It's stupidly dumb, but it never tries to be anything else. Despite my love for the Young Ones and Bottom, I have yet to warm to this big screen version. But, if you're thinking of watching it, based on what I've seen I am now in the minority. It seems that Guest House Paradiso has found its market at last and time has been more forgiving than the critics at the time and me now. I'll always have a special fondness for the antics of Richie and Eddie, just not here. Sorry, boys.
WakenPayne I Think That IMDb Has To Be Split Up Because Not Every Movie Can Be Judged On The Same Level(Compare This To Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...You Can't Can You?), This Film Was Always Going To Be Stupid(Explain How Richard Blew Up In An Oven And Still Survived), Since Adrian Edmondson And Rick Mayall Asked Each other "What If Bottom Became A Movie?" This Is Another One Of Those "Plot Doesn't Matter" Movies Where You Only Watch It For The Laughs, The Funniest Part Is The Entire Sequence When Richard Was In Womens Underwear Running Around The Hotel, Name Any Part Out Of Those 10 Minutes; The Italian Love Goddess Movie Star Seeing Him In That State(Of Course He Hides), How He Explains To Eddie What The Hell He's Doing Yet Trying To Make Him Believe He Is Hereto Sexual(He Doesn't Succeed, If He Did I WOULD Compare It To Shakespeare.), Richard Blowing Up In An Oven, Eddie Blowing Up Richards Pantes, Its All Hysterical.Overall I Suggest A Viewing If You Want To See A Really Dumb Comedy.(Or If You Want To See Bill Nighy And Simon Pegg In The Same Movie But Not On Screen Together.)
Everett-Ulysses-McGill This is maybe the best slapstick-movie I ever seen. The first ten minutes I'm laughing without breathing. The movie seems to be senseless, but try to watch out the many references to other movies. The poor people who visit "Guesthouse Paradiso" are very unfortunate, but sometimes I can feel with the director of the Hotel, too. The good old dark British humor as it's best. It don't must hide behind "Death at a funeral" or other movies like this. So if you like to watch people fighting till the end, physical and psychical, or laugh about senseless and maybe bad tasted sketches, than watch it. And be prepared for a end who blows you away!!!
Lars_E At first I must say brilliant!This is a movie that gets more interesting every time I watch it. The first time I just had a hilarious laughter orgy. The second time (Still laughing my head off) I noticed the kitchen door stolen from an old Tati movie. As one takes another look more things appear.The obvious Torquay connection: How can a movie like this made after Fawlty Towers avoid being compared? I love Fawlty Towers, I love Mr Hulot's Holiday and love this movie. I bet next time anyone will rant over a movie based on a hotel under strange circumstances they will probably rant over similarities with Guest House Paradiso just as well as with Fawlty Towers. There are lots of thefts from other movies. A fact that only makes it funnier.
