Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

As a child, I always loved to watch the Burbank, Jetlag and Golden Film animations at my grandparents. Hansel and Gretel was one of my first Burbanks, and I still really like it now. I have seen better animation before, but it is bright and colourful when it should be and not too flat in darker coloured scenes, and the music fits the mood very well. The dialogue is sweet and humorous while never being too corny, and while a couple of scenes feel a tad padded in the middle the story retains the basic feel of the fairytale and never let my interest waver. The friendly family of trolls were good additions. Hansel and Gretel are both appealing characters, and while I never found the Witch scary she was still a memorable character. The ending was a nice if different surprise. All in all, a childhood favourite that still holds up. 8/10 Bethany Cox
