Am I Missing Something?

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

If you are here, then you already know the movie you're watching is not Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Within 5 weeks, three movies titled Hansel and Gretel were released, presumably to piggyback off of the success of the 50 billion U.S dollar Hansel and Gretel. I'm assuming (judging by other reviewers) that everyone watched this thinking they were seeing the big Hollywood blockbuster that was heavily marketed. Hence: the hatred. This is an Asylum movie. It isn't their best but definitely not their worst either. The performances and effects are decent as far as Asylum movies go. The storyline is good and there's definitely enough tension to keep you looking at the screen till the end credits. In short: if you like Asylum movies (low budget cheesy horror, mostly) you will absolutely love this one. If you're thinking this movie is the big blockbuster Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters then you will be extremely displeased.

The wonderful Dee Wallace is the only thing preventing this movie from being a total cheesefest. She's a great actress that is evident even in this film. Poor Hansel is a bad actor, which was annoying. Also annoying were the amount of times Hansel and Gretel had access to weapons but never used them. Ridiculous when you are running for your life from cannibalistic maniacs. Little things like that annoyed me throughout the movie but Dee Wallace kinda made up for them. I did like all the candies, cookies and magic powder featured in this film that gave it a fantasy aspect. The film gets pretty gory yet still feels like a movie for children. To me anyway.

It's unfortunate that you're not allowed to give 10 NEGATIVE points, and even that would mean I'd be doing this movie a service. The actors were bad, the script is beyond awful and the whole idea of bringing out a movie with the same title in the same year as the one you're ripping off is just plain being assholes.Please hunt down all copies of this movie and burn them.Here I thought I was done reviewing. But nooo, Amazon expects me to vent for at least ten lines. No problem, I could probably go on for 10 pages. The "witch" for example was particularly bad, just plain retarded for example the scene where she "catches" Gretel. A punch to her face would have put paid to that.Then there's the kids' father - getting ready to be ripped of by his soon to be new bride. Hellooooo.... could see that coming from a mile ahead. Not that I watched the movie long enough to see if they actually had that in the script, too, but it's just very pathetic.And the no-good 20-something Hänsel, a slacker if I've ever seen one, suddenly growing a pair? Really??

Half way through this movie some of the characters and the overall storyline were enjoyable enough to overlook the lack of special effects, obvious B production value, and occasional horrid line and had me really wanting to like this movie. Then it all went to hell. It seems at a certain point the writer smoked PCP and lost all direction and , avoiding spoilers, the ending couldn't of been any more of a let down then that.. That being said Dee Wallace, Stephanie Greco, Brent Lydic all displayed some real talent. Dee played the crazed villain to the letter, and I hope to see more from the up and comers Stephanie and Brent in the near future (Hopefully sporting much better dialogue).
