bob2632002 I read reviews here on movies that I might watch on premium networks or 'On Demand' movies. So, there were several good ones about this movie, likening it to "Training Day", which I loved. Wow, what a huge disappointment, not even close to Training Day. With a good cast, I had high expectations. So, if you like f**k, this and f**k that, and homeboy handshakes every 40 seconds, you're in luck. I kept expecting the plot to pick up. I kept expecting the acting to get better. I kept hoping the grainy film would clear up. Just don't look for anything more than 'filler' on your screen. I forwarded to the bitter end after about an hour and change. Look elsewhere!
downie-pat Really confused and misguided film. You will have a harsh time watching this! There is little to no story line and just random acts of violence which seem to serve no purpose other than to pad out a film. Christian Bale is as intense as ever but even he can't save a film with as little plot as this. Why the main character is the way he is is never really explained and the flash backs also make no sense and bare no relevance to the storyline. This film is just a bunch of random events thrown together and called cinema. Save yourself 2 hours and do something else.
Ohritski Kliment Harsh times is a very hard film to enjoy. Its a gritty drama, filled with violence, drugs and insanity. That's why people seem to dismiss it, there's so much in-you-face material that the deeper meaning gets ignored.I can't comment too much without spoiling, so I'll just give a recommendation- watch the whole film and try too look past the IMDb score and your first impression of the characters.Bale's acting gets bashed a lot, but that's part of his character. His psychotic behavior and insanity are part of the loud subtlety of this film.Even if we ignore the plot, this movie has a great atmosphere that will appeal to people who enjoy realistic and dark portrayals of real life cities. It reminded me a lot of The Wire.
Floated2 Harsh Times tells the story of a former Ex-Ranger Jim (Christian Bale) who conducts himself back to the city of Los Angeles trying to survive and make a living along with his good friend Mike (Freddy Rodriguez). The pairing between Bale and Rodriguez is genuine and is what makes this film great. What I enjoyed about the film is the vibe to it and it's realism. Bale's character is a depressed individual suffering from disorders and he portrays it brilliantly. A lot of the criticism is due to the dialoque with the constant use of the words "dude, bro, dawg, homie" and more slang of that nature, it can get annoying as it is used a ton it the films first half hour (also throughout), however it represents the realness that Bale and Rodriguez share. Also includes a lot of cursing. Some shocking moments occur in the film where you wouldn't have expected that to happen. There are some brutal violence towards the latter end of the film. What I did not like is that the films climax did not get as high as I have thought. There could have been a few twists along the way. However the ending will either make you feel depressed in anger and shocked or thrilled. Overall Harsh Times is an unpredictable gripping drama between two close friends on a journey.
