Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Look, the original Heavy Metal isn't exactly a masterpiece. But it knew what it was, and kept things interesting through animation, music, variety, and lack of restraint. It was a homage to the most stereotypical tropes of the genre, even satire. Heavy Metal 2000 is legitimately a stereotypical "metal" film.Heavy Metal 2000 is essentially the final short of Heavy Metal extended. It shows why Heavy Metal was split into shorts to begin with. The story is predictable and the characters are flat. There is a lot more violence and sex in this film than the typical sci-fi story, but you have no investment to those involved, and its not over-the-top enough to be awesome or funny. To put it bluntly - Heavy Metal 2000 is a boring film, with no identity.Heavy Metal 2000 also suffers in artistic production. The backgrounds are sometimes nice...but there is sooooo much brown and gray! Its a gritty, ugly film. The characters...how do I put this...seem too soft? There is too little detail to them, especially noticeable in close-ups. And we can't forget about the bad CGI. The smoke and fire effects look like they were added in 5 minutes.I'm more of a power metal guy, so I can't say how good the music is. But I've seen no defenders of this film's soundtrack.Heavy Metal 2000 is awful. Only fans of the sleazy should give it a chance. It fails on every mark. Dull, stupid, and unaware, don't be fooled by the Heavy Metal name.

Heavy Metal magazine was one of the best things growing up. I have both of the movies and still love the original, but this movie does not compare at all. The story is a little laughable. Heavy Metal has literally hundreds of stories to pick from so why they selected this one I just don't know. The animation is good, and so are the acting talents even without John Candy. They could have done so much better though. One scene is stolen directly from the first movie, almost literally. The heroin babe of the story has to dress in her sexy battle outfit, and they could have just copied and pasted the scene from the first movie considering it's almost exactly the same. Talk about lazy.If you see this on TV (Teletoon or something) it's worth a watch, but personally I wouldn't pay any more than $5 bargain bin prices for it.

Heavy Metal 2000 is the sequel to the 1981 animated-anthology film "Heavy Metal".The original Heavy Metal was a great film.It combined humor, graphic violence, sex and interesting sci-fi storyline. It was an excellent animated film and it never gets old.Being a fan of the old one, I watched the sequel as well. The sequel is fairly different from the original. While the original was told in anthology form, this one is not.I have not seen this movie in a while so I do not remember the plot that much.It is actually a bit like the final story of the original "Heavy Metal".The animation is good, the same kind as featured in the film "Titan A.E", there are a few good songs, but the soundtrack is nowhere near as good as the original film, the violence and sex are still there.Overall, it's a decent film but nowhere near as good as the first film.

I didn't actually watch this film in its entirety until now. During my many previous attempts, I would always fall asleep, or become distracted by something else. Finally, tonight, I was miraculously able to sit through the whole thing. After two decades have passed, how can you create a sequel worthy of the cult status garnered by the original; one that wouldn't completely disappoint fans? The answer from the creators of HM 2000 is apparently, "why bother?" Cheesy CGI is unevenly exchanged, back and forth, with hand-drawn animation, making the flow and appearance of the film choppy. Scenes resembling 2D Disney animation suddenly, without warning, cut into 3D video-game-like graphics. Were the deadlines really harsh enough to justify this kind of Adobe software abuse? The voice actors were hopelessly emotionless and deadpan. Never have I heard less inflection in a character's delivery. It sounded like they'd never actually rehearsed the lines, and were reading them for the first time. If your friend was being electrocuted in front of you, would you speak to them like you were reading out of a textbook? Also, Taarna was a MUCH better (and hotter) heroine than Julie. She actually had depth, emotion, courage, character development, and heart. She is a martyr, and her conflicts have a meaningful purpose that can be both personal and universal. All Julie does is fight. Her personality lacks dimension.... you can't empathize with her because no softer, human side is presented to the viewer. And then there's the music. One of the great things about the original was how the songs blended into the scenes, and they played a good portion of each song. In HM 2000, you hear only short blips that don't particularly pertain to the visual action. Add juvenile humor, stereotypical movie clichés ("the key has never been found.... UNTIL NOW"), and you have a recipe for cinematic disaster. Save for the title, HM 2000 had absolutely NOTHING to do with the original. They have nerve marketing it under the same name. If you are currently suffering from insomnia, this is a must-own DVD.
