Reviews

StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Sienna-Rose Mclaughlin The movie really just wants to entertain people.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Francene Odetta It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
mks-05566 As the headline indicates, after a few minutes I announced the plot to the room. Some said I was wrong, most realized I had ruined the "twist." I give it a 2, because, spoiling the big reveal was fun for me. I enjoy horror films. Different styles, even. But I was suspicious towards the hype surrounding this one. I admit my review of it isn't very kind, perhaps not even fair. I do think it's important, especially for those who haven't seen this, to know the "twist" isn't much--if you're paying close attention, the whole plot will be handed to you, in a nutshell, within the first few minutes of this movie.Just thought folks should know. Sorry to be such a sour reviewer.
SnoopyStyle Marie and Alex drive to spend a couple of days on Alex's parents' farm. Marie has a crush on her best friend Alex. Everybody is sleeping while Marie masturbates. Someone rings the doorbell. Alex's father answers the door and is killed. One by one, her family is slaughtered. Alex is chained up and taken. The phone is cut. Marie goes unnoticed by the killer and sneaks onto the truck. This is bloody and violent. It's brutal once the blood starts splattering. Cécile de France has a great look. It's an ultra-violent French horror and fairly effective as a brutal blood fest. Then there comes the twist. This twist is getting a little tired and overused. It's not that well constructed in this case. The twist becomes something tacked on out of nowhere.
spock-billy-spike A very good horror movie in terms of horror movies. It had a decent script and great directing at times, but the plot needed some reworking. The mysterious killer needed more background and set up, they felt one-dimensional at times, even if they gain some explanation around the end. An character who is unknown for half of the film can't be very scary. The way that Marie's character is set up is interesting, but for the sake of the plot it would have made more sense for her to have been a man. The second half of the movie has a lot of influences and some thought provoking points, but related more to a heterosexual couple, especially due to some phallic object shots by the director. I think they thought that the two female characters would bring another dimension to the movie, but it's clear that it was originally thought out with a male and female. My favourite part of the movie was the ending, not to be mean, just the last scene was the most interesting and clear cut part of the movie. All in all, it's a decent movie-movie, and a pretty good horror movie. Don't expect everything to get explained and you should enjoy it.
Creepy-Suzie My best friend Amy is a lesbian. She dates guys once in awhile, but she truly loves women. She doesn't wear her hair short, and she likes pretty dresses, high heels, and lip gloss. She wasn't the stereotypical lesbian that "High Tension's" Marie was at all. Now having said all that, I really think Alex should have bought the clue that not only was her closest pal a lesbian, but Marie was rocking a major crush on her. Perhaps she did know, yet chose to tease Marie. Teasing is not nice. Teasing can get you killed…The film begins with two girls in the car on a road trip listening to what ends up being an amazing soundtrack. (…and by the way, yes, girls do sing like that in the car when we're alone together) Alex and Marie make their way to mom and dad's for the night when madness ensues. I recall feeling sickeningly claustrophobic during the bathroom scene, and as the apt title suggests, the tension was insurmountable. The effects of the kills were exceptional, but I had to wonder if the cut would be quite so clean regarding an occurrence on the stairs. With the exception of a couple masturbation scenes, the sexuality of this film, which could have been overt, actually faded like an afterthought. This was a film about mental illness and personality struggle with an inner beast. It was also a fairly twisted love story. This is a bona fide horror film, however, but it's more on par with "May" than "MSP". It has a unique mood and the horror is entirely plot driven sans utter nastiness, with the exception of one very memorable instrumental kill and a corn field scene involving a child. Some say that they predicted the twist, but I really didn't. Regardless, the story's concrete and Aja's direction is solid. The setting of the house was a light hearted innocence, hearkening to the country days of leaving your door unlocked and inviting in a stranger for a home cooked meal and use of your phone if needed. The blood spattered floors gave a sharp contrast to that warm splendor of rural life. Lighting and the fleeting blue tones in the truck scenes were remarkable. I could sense the despair and chill of the cold steel pressing persistently on raw wrists and bare thighs. This film ranks in my top ten horror favorites and as always, all subs no dubs- Enjoy! Your pal Creepie Suzie P.S. If you have already seen this movie… just imagine if there was no twist! What is would pale to what could have been and this film could have been one amazingly deranged, dirty, and completely scummy slasher flick. Ahhhhhhh… what could have been… if only. Regardless though, it's not a bad little piece of cerebral horror cinema as it stands.
