SPOILER ALERT This movie depends a lot on the charisma of its two (straight) stars. I appreciate how difficult it is to film a true story and stick (more or less) to the facts. I knew nothing about this man so everything to me was unexpected which helped me appreciate it more. Obviously the comic elements didn't exist in the real story but I felt that they exaggerated the camp aspect at times. However they sure made the film entertaining! Kudos especially to Jim Carrey. And I'll always appreciate Chances Are more after seeing that late night prison dance scene!

One word: AMAZING. A tear jerking film that was totally worth watching, I saw it once but wasn't watching it seriously so I had to watch it again (cried both times though!). I thought it was weird at first seeing Jim Carrey play a gay man with Ewan McGregor but you come to realise that the film is just about pure love, persistence, and connection between two people. This is the first film I've seen where it actually made sense and worked SO WELL it kind of surprised me how into it I got. I could genuinely understand their relationship in a very weird but wonderful way. The intelligence and wit of Jim's very complex but pure at heart character is truly something to behold, conning his way through jobs in amazingly crafty ways along with the very soft, quiet, and lovable character Ewan plays is crafted in a way that I can't put into words; it just worked so well. Although the two characters are polar opposites, they work so harmoniously together. If you want a film that isn't just your 'stereotypical hot gay gays' film and is funny, sad, and exciting then it is perfect; a must watch, I wish the film went on longer. Amazing as well to realise that this was actually based on real life. Perfect film.

Last night I watched this movie for the third time. I was impressed even more than before by the sheer skill of the screenplay, of the editing, and of the performances. I then went online and read some reviews and found aspects of them baffling. Whilst many critics admired the film, some found a lack of sexual chemistry between the two male leads. This is rubbish. Perhaps it's projection on the part of straight journalists, nervy about such stirrings in themselves. Jim Carrey and and Ewan McGregor make a lovely couple. McGregor in particular is wonderful as the long-suffering, trusting, gentle and somewhat feather-brained Phillip Morris. Put this performance beside his tour de force in YOUNG ADAM and you'll get a sense of his remarkable acting range. Range is not something that Carrey can boast but well-cast he can be excellent and there really isn't anyone who could match him here. Perfect casting. Some critics also complain that the film slows down after its bravura opening section. Not true. It just changes pace. It has to: if it didn't it would be like an hour-and-a-half video game. What we have here is a brilliantly written, well-performed, shrewdly judged piece of writing, based on events which, as the opening credits remind us, actually happened. It really did. I've no doubt I'll keep coming back to I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS. If you haven't seen it yet, please do.

This film was oddly disengaging. Try as I might I just couldn't 'like' the main characters nor care what they went through. I feel more sorry for the real guy locked up for life when child molesters often get released only to re-offend.Jim Carrey looked way too old to be playing a thirty year-old. I'm not sure how old he really is but boy, here with that bad dyed hair he looks about 60. His depiction of the main character is just awful; like a hyper-active schoolboy with no clear motives. It was just a direction-less, awful, hollow performance from him and he looked awful. He is past his use-by; neither funny enough for slapstick nor good enough for anything remotely serious.I did not believe for one moment that there was any 'love' between the two leads at all. Zero chemistry, zero believability and an almost insulting and simplistic straight-man's idea about what it means to be gay. I didn't believe the 'love' part ... what was to love in that cardboard character of Phillip Morris? The 'love' part was the main plot device and it just wasn't evident or believable here.It seems the makers went full-tilt for a comedic angle here but more substance was needed to engage the audience. Prison life is made out to be so simple and easy, 'love' is just there with no questions asked.I wanted to like this, but it was a forgettable and empty mess; there's far more depth to be found in simply researching the story online. This movie does no justice at all to the real story. Bernie with Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine was a far better example of a quirky crime case made into a film. Avoid this one like the plague, its an insult to gay people and the audience's intelligence.
