A brilliant film that helped define a genre

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

The reviews on the poster for the movie were quite good, so I expected this movie to be better. It is not a bad movie. Although you can sum up the plot of the movie in a sentence: a couple got lost in the woods and are driving in a car in circles trying to find a hotel. At the end, I did not really understand whether the hotel exist or not. The 'house' with so many smashed cars is not really a hotel or ... I don't know. I guess it is one of the mysteries of the movie. The 3rd character is also a mystery. It does add to the story of the movie, but his own story remains hidden and his motive for the 'game ' with a couple is a bit ... too much. The biggest plus for the movie are some beautifully done scenes.5 from me.

In Fear is the story of a young, new couple who are on their way to a music festival in Ireland and decide to stay over night at a remote hotel. Unfortunately, their trip takes a serious downturn when they get lost in the maze of country roads on route. Just when they think that it couldn't get any worse, they soon realise that someone - or something - is toying with them. This actually isn't too bad of a wee film, but it unfortunately just fails to really hit the mark, especially for the 2nd half. The 1st half of the movie does well, building up a nice bit of suspense, and drawing you into the story. It does a good job at kind of making you feel claustrophobic with the small, narrow dark roads the couple travel down and also being inside a car for a lot of the time. Having driven down country roads like this myself in Scotland I know how it can feel. Also, with them being in such a remote part of the country brings it's own feel to the movie as well. The 2nd half of the movie, however, doesn't really build up on this and it kind of stalls along the way. It actually gets a wee bit repetitive at times as well with the couple seemingly just driving around in circles. The actors do a pretty good job with what they have, and along with a good couple of creepy moments, In Fear is, like I say, not too bad of a film. It's not the best movie I've seen but it's definitely not the worst either.

I don't mind weird when it's done well. Take something from David Lynch or the new UK king of weird Ben Wheatley and it can be mesmerising despite unexplained parts of the plot or mysterious characters. In Fear writer and director Peter Lovering looks to have taken this approach but has got it badly wrong. Many people have already mentioned the holes in the plot, its like a blooming Swiss cheese. Just imagine you have been attacked by a crazee wearing a mask only to escape to the car and race off down the road and then hit someone. would you a( Stop and go back to check if the person is alright or b)get the hell out of there? You guessed it, our intrepid hero and heroin go back. Ridiculous. A man and a woman in a car get the lost in the Irish countryside and strange things happen apparently because of a spilt drink in a pub. The end defies description never mind explanation. Watchable though.

In Ireland, Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Alice Englert) are traveling for a music festival. They have been together for a couple of weeks only and Tom decides to make a surprise to Lucy and spend the night with her in a remote hotel in the woods. They follow the signs on the narrow and winding road and soon they realize that they are lost and the backwoods road is a maze. Soon they are frightened by a stranger that threatens them and Tom realizes that their car is running out of gas. While escaping from the stranger, they hit a man on the road and they bring him to their car. The stranger is called Max (Allen Leech) and soon they discover that he is the man that is tormenting them along the night. What is the motive for Max to torture them?"In Fear" is a tense thriller with good performances. Unfortunately the good acting is wasted by a terrible story full of holes and awful conclusion. Who would go to a remote place without filling the tank of the car? How could one guy bring so many people to a derelict hotel in the middle of nowhere without any investigation from the police? The plot has a promising beginning but in a certain moment it becomes annoying. My vote is three.Title (Brazil): "Uma Noite Para Esquecer" ("One Night to Forget")
