BrickNash What the hell were the critics thinking when they gave this film negative reviews at the time?Jersey Girl is a charming, heartfelt and very emotional....I won't even call it a comedy as it really feels more like a drama in a lot of parts. There are loads of incredibly well played scenes which blend 'fish out of water', 'rom-com' and even 'buddy movie' at times. It's well written as you would expect from Smith, but the directing is where the film comes in to its own, and of course it helps when you have talent like the brilliant George Carlin on board and Ben Affleck makes a really good lead as he's shown in Smith's previous films. There are scenes in this film which just boil so effortlessly from calm and cold to scalding hot and trust me, they hit you right in the feels. Raquel Castro as seven year old Gertie is one of the sweetest screen girls you'll ever see and her personalty and wit will make you fall in love with her after only a few scenes. This is a great film to watch with a loved one and a glass or five of wine, or even just on your own if you want a very emotional, sweet and feelgood experience. It's so depressing to know that Smith was really affected by the negative reviews of this film which are TOTALLY undeserved, and just goes to show that you should NEVER listen to critics. EVER!Fantastic film!
Raul Faust Considering many people told me good about this picture, I decided giving it a chance. For the first twenty minutes, it seemed to be an okay flick, since we had a reasonable plot and a possibly moving storyline. However, after the Will Smith thing, everything went downhill; that scene felt extremely implausible, given that NO ONE in the world would act that way. After that, we had the absurd 7 years of absence thing-- which man on EARTH would stay 7 years without sex?? Only in movies! Besides, would a handsome dude like Ben Affleck's character have to work as a garbage collector? Wouldn't exist a thousand better options for him, like being a model or something? Also, the "I Hate You" scene felt as cheesy as the other I mentioned. The performance thing was just corny as well. To be honest, I'm being very sweet in giving it five stars; maybe that's due to the eventual good acting coming from Ben Affleck and the relatively good message the movie (tried to) put across.
SnoopyStyle Ollie Trinkie (Ben Affleck) is a big time music publicist. Her wife Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez) is pregnant. Everything is great until Gertrude dies in childbirth. Ollie is over his head, and in frustration, he ridicules his new client Will Smith's music in a big public blowup. He's fired, and moves back in with his cranky father (George Carlin) in New Jersey. The movie then picks back up 7 years later. Ollie and his girl Gertie (Raquel Castro) meets young videostore clerk MPDG Maya (Liv Tyler). This starts off awkwardly. JLo is in this for 15 minutes and she dies right away. It's not funny even with the standard diaper changing scene. The movie really doesn't get going until the kid arrive. She's a spunky cutie. I would definitely cut out the first part if Kevin Smith intends on making this a rom-com. There's no point in showing JLo other than in angelic flashbacks. Kevin Smith needs to get to Liv Tyler much faster. She generates most of the funniest moments in this movie. All of this is a moot point. The fact is the movie was killed by the breakup of Affleck and JLo. It never had a chance.
Danny Blankenship Typical Kevin Smith movies are full of parody and slapstick involving comic book skits and super hero references, however after many years I decided to watch this little known 2004 gem titled "Jersey Girl". And I must say that Kevin hit the jackpot with this picture it's heartfelt and has a touching story about life and love, plus I'm a little partial to Jersey girls they are the best lovers in my opinion! Featuring Hollywood star Ben Affleck who stars as Ollie a big New York city publicist who all of a sudden one day has his life to take a big unexpected twist after becoming a single dad in a tragic way the cocky and stubborn Ollie finds himself fired and living back at his New Jersey neighborhood home with his middle class dad the funny and now late legend George Carlin. In a good and heartfelt twist Ollie meets a sexy educated and sophisticated video store clerk played by Liv Tyler and this makes Ollie rethink things and he rediscovers that life, family and love is the most important thing! Also nice eye candy scene of Liv Tyler sporting a purple bra in the shower! Overall heartfelt film that proves work and jobs take a backseat to love and family.
