Sadly Over-hyped

a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

A man decides he has had enough of his humdrum existence so goes home to kill himself. As a parting shot he decides to fulfil a rather sad bucket list - confront the school bully etc. This film is a massive mess. It opens with a very bland monologue that has you edging towards the remote. Then, as the lead goes about his plans all the surrounding characters unload their personal baggage on to him.He gets the full load too, resentment, bitterness, jealousy, homophobia, body image, infidelity, regret etc. etc. etcCarving up this convey belt of pain are a number of misplaced knob and vagina gags. The strange thing is, I kind of enjoyed this movie. It is over the top, badly put together but somehow fun. The hipster in me was screaming in outrage as I laughed along to some really childish set pieces. The cast is all great, production great. Shouldn't work, but does - for me anyway.

We found this movie on DVD from the public library. My introduction to Seann William Scott was those years ago where he played the dumbest, most useless character in the world in the "American Pie" movies. In fact in one of my reviews I stated that he ruined the movie for me. Now he carries this movie and he does it well, proving that with the right material he is good. Here he is Ted Morgan and as the movie begins we see him underwater, apparently about to drown. he wants to die, he is tired of finding reasons why he should live.In flashbacks we see Ted was a nice, smart, meek boy who was bullied in grade school. He grew up to be an ordinary, middle of the road guy, working in a pet store and married, but then seeing his wife cheating with her guitar instructor. When he grew up he moved as far away from Massachusetts as he could, to California. So now he is going back, to tell off the teacher who was mean to him, to punch the bully, and then with his life in order kill himself. His plans hit a pothole when he meets pretty and upbeat Olivia Thirlby as Greta, the dying old teacher's granddaughter, as he is yelling at her in her old folks home bed. Greta decides she will document Ted's quest to end his life.So basically what this movie is about is Ted's thinking he has it so bad but when he goes back home the cute little girl is now married with 5 kids, a dullard for a husband, she does laundry, and she has gotten very big. The bully he finds out was always bullied by his own dad and has grown up to be a very nice guy who loves his own special needs son. His brother's wife is acting weird. So basically he sees that he actually has it pretty good compared to others. Garret Dillahunt is often a bit too far over the top as Ted's policeman brother, Lucky Morgan, and his unhappy wife who pretends to be sleep walking when she goes into Ted's room at night to undress and masturbate in front of him, Kate Walsh as Kathleen Morgan. Then there's the homosexual teenage son. Yes, this story has some really screwed up characters, the humor works often but sometimes it is just weird. But overall it is a good movie as long as one doesn't shy away from lots of filthy language by most characters. That seems to be how everyone is making comedies these days. On a side note it was nice seeing Connie Stevens as Nancy, the mom of Ted and Lucky. Seann William Scott is the best thing in this movie.

Just Before I Go is one of the silliest, pointless films I have ever watched. There was one particular scene, where the character Greta is talking to the character Ted during what was supposed to be an intense, high-drama scene. The syrupy, ridiculous and silly words that come out of Greta's mouth were so inappropriate for the scene that I was instantly embarrassed for her that she had to say them, and I alternated between being embarrassed for Courtney Cox to being angered at Cox that after seeing that scene so many times during the performance, dailies and screenings she said to herself, "Yeah, that's good" and included it in the film. The lines that were meant to be jokes missed their marks by a long shot, with some even being insulting, like a running gag about someone becoming a "retard." Sure, a minor character does pop his head up and says he finds that word offensive – ya think? – but that hardly makes it OK for the use of the word and the way it is used. And to be sure, I am not someone who is caught up in political correctness; quite the opposite.I feel the worst for Olivia Thirlby, who is a classically trained actor, having trained extensively in classical Shakespearian acting in New York at the American Globe Theatre, and in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Why on earth would she accept a role like this?If this is the best work Courtney Cox can do as a director, she needs to go back to acting and leave directing to professionals who know what they are doing. There is a reason this film grossed only $8,129 for its US opening weekend. Heck, you could put your home movies on a few screens around the country and gross more than $8,129.This movie is terrible.

I really loved this movie. It had so many different character types that all played together very well and made a really great story line. I loved the plot. When my sister brought the movie home and told me what it was about I was kinda freaked out... but I think they took a gloomy situation, and situations that are very real and things that people really struggle with, and brought light to them. It reminded me of the show shameless in some way. With all the family dysfunctions. But at the end of the day, what is more important than family?? I laughed a lot, and I even cringed at some parts. I honestly cant think of anything that I dislike about the movie!
