Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

I bought this because I am a huge fan of Deepika Padukone and ended up loving it for the work that Farhan Akhtar brings to it. I never heard much about this flick, and was pleasantly surprised how well crafted the story line is. Basic descriptions make you think it's another Bollywood romance, and romance is there, but it's not overtly gushing as some films have nowadays. The crafting comes with the small props like the Rubik's Cube that pops up in several scenes, the sound of Karthik's heartbeat when the scene is intense, the camera angles that make you feel like you are part of the scene, or the music playing that is just right for the moment. As you watch the movie the plot becomes believable and you start to feel for Karthik. Deepika's character, Shonali, is portrayed perfect. Not as some way out of reach girlfriend, but as someone approachable, even someone without any social skills. All the side characters play their rolls perfect and contribute to the story without stealing the thunder from Farhan and Deepika. It's has a perfect mix of romance, drama and mystery thrown all together in a beautiful mix.

Karthik calling Karthik is a good movie with decent suspense and nice romance and comedy in between....although i had figured out a certain part of the suspense it still did succeed to surprise me a couple of times or so...so for those wouldn't know the suspense in the beginning it would be even better...a real revelation....the movie doesn't progress at a very fast pace-and that's not a negative aspect of the film-but it does progress steadily...the basic concept though was inspired but the story and screenplay were original and impressive...the dialogs are witty, funny and real not filmy....the first time director Vijay Lalwani is good...did not expect him to be as much good...there were some slick scenes shot in black and white-really liked their timing and the style-and some impressive camera work...his direction is better than what i expected because i didn't expect much....the director gives no unnecessary build ups and wastes no time in bringing in the main theme of the movie to the forefront...farhan akhtar is just amazing in his role and without doubt its no easy role to play..he impresses as the loser Karthik..the suave Karthik..and as the Karthik's voice over the phone...Deepika Padukone is good too...she's damn spontaneous and that's one quality i like in actors...but not every actor has it....the supporting cast is good too...the music is amazing..Shankar Ehsaan Loy's music is cool..background music complements well.... all in all its a nice entertainer with intelligent script and not the usual 'bollywood' crap...go check it out because when its farhan akhtar's movies he never fails to deliver.

John Houston's Maltese Falcon (1941) has a memorable scene. Humphrey Bogart's Sam Spade creates quite ruckus outrageously shouting at the "Fat man", breaking a glass for the effect snapping he means business and giving him a deadline. He walks out with a grin on his face facing audience happy with the bluff-show he put up just in there. Protagonist Karthik is no Sam Spade. He is shy and reserved, quite a loser in life. But after a 5 am call his life is turned upside down. He walks in the office, floors his boss with his worth, bags the job, money, new luxury cabin, position and then like in the same vein as Bogey chortles with the getaway and so are we.Before this transformation we meet him as a sad figure for sure. We see him being bullied then fired by his boss. Alone on his birthday with zero social-life and unnoticed by his long crush (Deepika, gorgeous presence) after years of working in same office. He tries to commit suicide. A call saves his life. Strange thing voice identifies himself as Karthik. Spooky? Yes. It changes his life. All things negated earlier are now reality. Call becomes his secret. Central conceit of the film forms its title.Film is pitched in as a thriller, a psychological one and when romance of story dominates and marks the peak moments, it's not a good sign. Frankly, conceit is weak and guessed before I got in my seat. Lurching in second half movie never tightens its grip on audience. Still it sparks with witty moments not to forget this an attempt which tries to divert from the conventional cinema.A word for Farhaan. He established himself as one contemporary breed of directors who makes urbane and smart mainstream films is definitely emerging as promising actor. He made his acting debut with Rock On! followed by a brilliant feat in Luck By Chance. He is like James Stalwart to me. Understated and striking. For him alone I can recommend this film but honestly overall it's partially worth. So final verdict – Rent it.

Despite being a different movie and a brave attempt, i cannot say that movie entertained me. The acting was satisfactory but nothing exciting, In an attempt to give movie feel of REALITY, the the plot looses itself many times in movie, many scenes were unnecessary and concept is not worth making a movie about....Farhan akhtar who is more then capable director with movies like 'DIL CHAHTA HAI' under his belt is expected to make better movies....and the last scene of movie makes sure that its a typical Hindi movie where hero always survives, the movie would have left greater impact, if karthik would have died...(and the phone would have rung again......at 5AM ;) )
