Excellent but underrated film

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

The movie really just wants to entertain people.

It's common knowledge that most movies featuring Statham are not much more then a bad-ass ex-something (Cop, Military, Marine, etc..) beating up dudes for revenge/money/saving family. But with a big name like DeNiro co-starring and the promising story, maybe this one is different? Well not much..The movie starts with Danny (Statham) and his old friend and mentor Hunter (DeNiro) in action as hired hit men for a mysterious Agent. The job goes reasonably well but Danny almost kills a kid which is the final straw for him to get out of the hit men business and settle down for a easy life. A year later Danny learns that Hunter is held hostage in Oman by the old Sheikh Amr, who summons Danny to talk to him. Once there Danny is given the task by the Sheikh to kill three former SAS agents who killed three of the Sheikh's sons. Danny reluctantly agrees and reunites with his old mates Davies and Meier to help him in exchange for a large sum of money. However, Danny and his friends soon find out that killing former SAS agents also means making new enemies and opening more cans of worms that they can handle.. If you watch this movie as a simple action flick with cool car chases, dirty fighting, shoot-outs and one-liners you will be satisfied. All these elements are there and they look good, although I didn't like the shaky cam during the fight scenes. However the movie also tries to tell some mysterious story about a secret organization and double agents but it fails badly here. The motivations of the characters are unclear, it's hard to follow what each person's role is in this and the ending is very unsatisfying. There is also a romance in the story for Danny's character which is told in annoying flashbacks that adds absolutely nothing to the plot. My final complain is that this movies is supposed to take place in 1980 but it doesn't look like 1980 at all. Sure they tried here and there by using older cars but there are to many mistakes that become to obvious. The movie 'Argo' did a much better job at how this time period is supposed to look. So if you watch Killer Elite with the mindset that it is a movie about bad-ass Statham beating up dudes for revenge\money\whatever, you will be entertained. If you want an interesting story with interesting character you will be disappointed.

Expecting your standard Statham Thick-Ear action flick? Well, that's what you get....sort of. The USP is that it is set in 1980 with all that implies in terms of cars and haircuts ( esp Dominic Purcell! ).Welcome to the movie that "The Professionals" could have been. From the dodgy right-wing worldview to classic UK motors screaming round corners, it's all there. With a Daily Express world view and A Daily Star view of women ( mostly slappers with one exception ) one half expects Cowley to show up.Of the talent Statham is Statham - there's an attempt to tire-lever in a love angle but it just makes you miss the shooting. Robert De Niro takes yet another pay packet for phoning it in. Clive Owen glowers and postures and looks faintly embarrassed to be in this codswallop.A Friday night pizza action movie with classic motors, dodgy politics and Jason Statham.

The movie presents a really nice story that nicely populates the entire movie's two hour duration. The focus shift from the hunter into becoming the hunted makes the movie feel dense story-wise. The added romance angle also feels just enough, without being overburdening or looking forceful. The action sequences real do justice to the big names of the cast included and the weight of the story's background base. The action build up sequences contains enough thrill and suspense to make the real action scenes top them as climactic move. The acting overall is nicely as what is expected from such a movie. Jason Statham played his role very well, reprising his all to comfortable character he built on all those action movies. Clive Owen stand as a worthy opponent story-wise and action-wise to Statham, adding the good sentiment for this movie even more. Even Robert De Niro played well with the not so significant action scenes.

Danny (Jason Statham) is a former elite services operative who finds himself having to come out of retirement when he discovers that his mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro) has been kidnapped by an Arab sheikh. The sheikh explains that he will let Hunter go and will pay him the sum of 6 million if he kills the 3 men responsible for killing the sheikh's sons. He calls upon his former associates Davies (Dominic Purcell) and Meier (Ade Young) to assist him with this task. However, this is no ordinary task and Danny and co are being forced to kill highly trained Special Air Services operatives led by Spike (Clive Owen). Will Danny be successful in this mission and ultimately free his mentor? Killer Elite starts off well and the final third of the film was pretty good. For me, the problem was the middle portion of the film which to me was just not particularly engaging, lacking in excitement and it lacked suspense. We have to remember that Danny and his operatives will at best only be as skilled as the Special Air Services members, yet in every single instance when Danny and Spike's operatives battle it out it was always Danny's men that came out on top. This is good so far as cheering on the good guy's goes, but seeing Danny and his boys always getting the upper hand made the film less tense and ultimately less believable. I always feel that the amount of enjoyment that you get from a film depends on how believable you find the characters or their actions and Danny's boys always getting the upper hand so easily didn't ring true to me. Then we come to how repetitive the film was - every time one of Spike's operative got killed we had a board meeting, operative killed, board meeting, rinse, repeat yawn!!!. The twist isn't entirely surprising and I found it to be a 'groan' type twist rather than a 'shock' type twist.Killer Elite isn't all bad and one of its major strengths is in its characters - Statham plays another ass kicker with a heart (it is becoming a bit of a cliché with him, but generally if I like a character then it means that I'll want to root for them). Likewise De Niro's character is also a likable guy. The best character for me in this film was Davies - in all honesty, prior to this film I'd only seen Dominic Purcell in Prison Break and thought he was a bit wooden when he was in that series. However, in Killer Elite he really brought his character to life and I can now see that he is a much better actor than I originally gave him credit for - all this despite his dodgy tash and beard combo lol. The era has also been captured well - lots of 70's car models and retro tunes - I remember 'I fought the law' playing at one point, but I'm sure there were countless other examples.Killer Elite is an OK film where its only really big faults are in its rather dull and repetitive story. I feel a bit bad butchering this film as it is based on a true story, but I just found it hard to get into it. As mentioned, the era was captured well, the characters were pretty cool and the acting was generally good. If only the story had been a bit more engaging.
