Absolutely Fantastic

It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.

Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

The best thing you can say about this predictable thriller is that it passes the time amiably enough, thanks to some fast pacing. Otherwise, it's nothing we haven't seen before, with Morgan Freeman doing his usual detective shtick (see 2001's ALONG CAME A SPIDER for more of this); a post-SEVEN world populated by dark, shadowy sets and a disturbed killer at the centre of the crimes. Although Freeman's investigation is kept interesting and there are some nice, original clues and twists to go along with, it's all very light and fluffy slick stuff which doesn't get the viewer involved. The editing is occasionally poor and the script confusing, not giving us enough time to register what characters are saying before dashing on in a mad panic to the next scene. The killer in the movie wears a Michael Myers-style mask, which makes for a few spooky scenes, and his weird cultured voice is also pretty effective. However, towards the end, the movie just becomes very predictable and the revelation that the killer is a policeman is far too obvious. After SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and SEVEN you would expect the film to be graphic but it isn't really, apart from a cool shooting at the finale. Morgan Freeman is as good as ever as the gruff detective but he isn't given much emoting to do; Ashley Judd is also pretty convincing as the kickboxing doctor who becomes a victim before regaining her strength and fighting back against the killer. The film does make good use of some nice photography, especially in some woodland chase sequences which are nightmarish to watch. Otherwise, it's just an interchangeable film which is easily forgotten, offering up a killer who is neither scary enough or original enough in his crimes to be that threatening, and concentrates on scenes of action rather than gradual plot development as it should. Worth a watch for genre fans or if you catch it on television, otherwise give it a miss. Not scary!

Kiss the Girls (1997): Dir: Gary Fleder / Cast: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Cary Elwes, Tony Goldwyn, Jeremy Piven: Potential chilling psychological thriller representing infliction or violation of its victims. Morgan Freeman plays a psychologist investigating the abductions of women whose bodies are found in the woods. He became involved in the case when his niece went missing. The killer is a collector of young women. The heart of the story regards Ashley Judd's escape through various caves and her recollection of what happened. She assists Freeman with the case in order to track down the missing girls. Intriguing until it becomes all too obvious who the killer is. The ending is a cheat when the killer enters Judd's home and viewers are teased shamelessly with elements such as her passing the killer a butcher knife. This only irritates as oppose to create suspense. Stylish direction by Gary Fleder who previously made Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead. He is alive and whether he was in Denver or not, the thing he wasn't doing was getting a screenwriter who could create genuine suspense here. What works best is the atmosphere and lighting, particularly in the dwelling place Judd finds herself. Freeman and Judd hold their own but Cary Elwes and Tony Goldwyn labor under flat material. Quite eerie even if its theme doesn't quite penetrate like kissing those girls. Score: 6 / 10

Currently rated at 6.5 on IMDb. Too many poor movies in the range 5.5 to 6.5. And some truly abysmal ones. This is not a poor movie. It has it's flaws, particularly the handwriting discovery towards the end - just not believable. But all round this is a good movie. Don't discard it based on the current IMDb rating. It is definitely worth watching. Both Freeman and Judd turn in great performances, as does Cary Elwes. Jeremy Piven and Tony Goldwyn put in their usual competent work, but they only appear briefly. The storyline has some nice twists, too. There are lots of good reviews here if you want to know more about the film. Mine is just to encourage you to not dismiss it out of hand.

It sure as hell beats watching Along Came A Spider or Alex Cross with Tyler Perry (Reviews coming soon) But there is nothing all that special about this movie. Despite its draggy moments at times, I was never truly bored. The mystery surrounding it did just enough to maintain my interest, but that's about it. It delivers some decent suspense throughout, but I saw the ending coming a mile away, and it wasn't too hard to figure out. Morgan Freeman is as solid as ever here as Dr. Cross. He can do this stuff in his sleep, but he was still very engaging to watch. I liked his chemistry with Ashley Judd as well. Ashley Judd is pretty good as well. She plays the sympathetic victim to a T and I was on her side the whole way. Cary Elwes is decent in his role. I either like him or get annoyed at him in his roles. I guess you can say I have a love and hate relationship with the guy. Tony Goldwyn, Jay O. Sanders, and Brian Cox provide decent support. Final Thoughts: It's not bad. Despite some draggy moments here and there, it maintains your interest for the most part. Don't expect Se7ven, and you'll be fine.6/10
