Horst in Translation (filmreviews@web.de) "Kitty Foiled" is an American cartoon from 1948, so this one has its 70th anniversary this year. It was written and directed by Hanna Barbera and this makes this another Tom and Jerry production of course that runs for over 7 minutes slightly as they do most of the time. They are going with the usual formula of adding a new supporting character to spice things up between the cat and mouse and this time it is a canary. And he is great fun, makes a nice little cute couple with Jerry and the two are just fun together while Tom isn't too shabby either and honestly you must have wondered when Tom will finally find another target and here he does. You can see that western films were really popular around that time as the part with the gun, the Indian scene and the final train scene all stood for that and they were all pretty hilarious. Tom's looks up on that train near the end were so hilarious as if insanity has gotten the better of him and he turned into Ca(p)tain Ahab eventually. I enjoyed this little film really a lot and it is far better than all the WB Sylvester/Tweety stuff, especially as this canary here is 100 times better than Tweety. It does not need the Oscar attention for me to say that here we have one of my favorite Tom and Jerry works and it gets even better on rewatch. Nice inclusion of Auld Lang Syne too. An absolute must-watch, not just for lovers of old cartoons.
Tweekums This Tom and Jerry short opens with a shot of a canary in its cage; in the background we can hear the sort of mayhem that can only mean Tom and Jerry are at it again! We then see Tom is in hot pursuit of Jerry, smashing things as he goes. It soon looks as if Jerry is done for but the canary comes to his rescue. The rest of the short involves Tom chasing the canary, who is then rescued by Jerry and Tom chasing Jerry who is rescued by the canary and Tom chasing both of them. Inevitably Tom comes off much worse as he is battered by the two creatures he is trying to catch. There is no real plot to this short; just a succession of chases and comic ways for Tom to get hurt. Probably not politically correct these days but I couldn't help laughing when Jerry disguised himself as an Indian and said 'How' in a really deep voice! Another highlight was when Tom tied Jerry to the tracks of a model railway and prepared to run him over with a train only to be foiled when the little bird dropped a heavy bowling ball on the tracks... utterly ridiculous but still funny! Overall its not the best Tom and Jerry cartoon but it has plenty of good laughs; I'm sure youngsters will love it along with those who enjoyed it as a child.
TheLittleSongbird I thoroughly enjoyed Kitty Foiled, never once did I find it generic and bland but that is just me. The sight gags are plentiful, and all of them work thanks to primarily the fast pacing. The best of them is when Tom ties Jerry to a railway track, and the canary saves Jerry's life by making a bowling ball fall through the track(and Tom falls through the hole of course), though everything else is on the money. As per usual, the production values and music are top notch, and while Tom is more sadistic than usual he is fun. And you really feel sorry for Jerry, but I had real admiration for the cute canary, anybody who saves Jerry's life is a friend of mine, that's what I'd say. Overall, thoroughly enjoyable and a lot of fun. 10/10 Bethany Cox
BA_Harrison Another routine Tom and Jerry escapade, Kitty Foiled is given the 'new character' treatment in an effort to disguise the fact that we've seen most of the gags before. This time around, Jerry is given a hand (or, rather, a wing) in his fight against Tom by a cute canary; together, the little bird and the plucky mouse are more than a match for the cat, repeatedly teaching him to pick on someone his own size by violently smashing, bashing and generally hurting the poor moggy (who, let's face it, is just following his natural instincts!!!).Towards the end of this rather tedious episode there are one or two moments that shine (the cat caught in the bear rug gag, and the bowling ball bomb), but, in general, this is one of the duo's lesser efforts.
