Wow! Such a good movie.

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows

We all have our own guilty pleasure, most of them we never admit to, however I will admit one now. I have loved this movie ever since I was a kid. Now that I've watched it as an adult, I can admit that it is one terrible movie, but it still had me laughing as hard as I did when I was 10 years old. In Ladybugs, Rodney Dangerfield plays a salesman who is asked to coach his company sponsored, girls soccer team, but he had no idea what he was in for. The other coaches are ruthless, the parents are insane, and worst of all his team is terrible, so what is a comedian to do? He gets his girlfriends, athletic, 14 year old son to dress up as a girl and join the team. The son is played by teen heartthrob Jonathan Brandis, who I became a huge fan of during the show Seaquest DSV. Brandis was absolutely hysterical as the teenage son, playing a teenage daughter. Some of his lines, along with his interactions with Dangerfield are pure comic genius. As for Dangerfield, while he was a legendary stand-up comedian, he was a terrible actor. The next logical step for a great stand-up comic is acting, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and while Dangerfield has some pretty funny lines, he is one of the worst acting comedians I have ever seen. The story here is a unique and interesting one, in a context that is most definitely not meant for younger kids. There are some funny lines and more laughs to be had at the ridiculousness of the situation, but besides that, this is not a great movie. I gave it an even rating, but when it comes to this film, I am biased by my admiration for the late Jonathan Brandis and my fondness for this film I have loved, since my childhood.

Man, this movie is even cheesier than I recall. It's somehow totally obvious and yet totally preposterous at the same time. But there are a few reasons to watch if you ever happen to catch it on light-night cable. First, Rodney Dangerfield is always worth a look. Every line of dialogue he has is invariably a one-liner. In LADYBUGS, most of those one-liners are embarrassingly forced, but every once in a while he comes up with a good one, well-timed. Secondly, Jonathan Brandis- who has since died a tragically Hollywood, drug-related death- is actually pretty good. He was one of those rare child actors who could actually hold his own. He's natural and not nearly as annoying as you would think. Finally, the beautiful Vinessa Shaw is always captivating, even in her early teens.

Seeing Jonathan Brandis acting as a girl in a dress really makes up for the severe shortcomings of Rodney Dangerfield acting like a complete idiot. Weird thing is that in the wig and white dress Brandis actually looks like a real girl until he starts to speak! The film had good potential until they casted Dangerfield in the role (is he some kind of american pervy Chubby Brown?) turning a childs movie into a movie for no particular age group due to the adult humour he injects. The storyline had good potential in the first half where Brandis agrees to act as a girl to help out the girls football team and also to get closer to his crush who is on the team, although the storyline is probably a bit far fetched (how many boys would go to such lengths just to get close to another girl?) until Brandis disappears for a while from the film after his mum sees him in a dress and the film goes off at a weird tangent showing a rival girls football team preparing with their military style coach and we all thought for a minute that that team would be an all-male female impersonators football team. The film ending was rather poor as well seeing the goal (sorry about the pun) was that Brandis wanted the girl and the girls football team wanted him and neither subject was well played out.

Most of the movie is ok for a hot summer evening with nothing better to do but I feel that the setup isn't scoring. Why does Matthew agree to be a girl and play as Martha instead of assisting Coach Chester. And why do they lie about it to Bess? The jokes are alright too with a few that are to much. The acting of Jonathan Brandis was good, best know from this role in Seaquest DSV. I have seen movies of Rodney Dangerfield before and ain't impressed, the eye balls gig is near scary. Vinessa Shaw does some nice acting but didn't get much screentime. The rest of the cast are one timers or unknown (to me) actors/Actresses with exceptions of Blake Clark (Coach Bull) who had a regular guest roll in Tim Tayor's Home Improvement. Another worth mentioning is Chuck McCann (the Bartender of the bar Chester is drinking) he had regular voice acting roles in famous Disney TV Animated Series as Ducktales and Tale Spin.Anyway, when it's on tv and you've nothing better to do Ladybirds is a good way to kill time.
