bladesofchaos She performed extremely well in this movie and helps bring the video game back to life!!!!
justin-fencsak In the beginning there was Super Mario Bros. Then came Street Fighter. After that, Mortal Kombat and its sequel. Then came Wing Commander, and all hope was lost. In 2001, two major brands which would soon go under the Square Enix banner dominated the summer box office with different results. One, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, wasn't based on a video game and was an original story with amazing CGI yet it failed at the box office and forced Square to exit the movie business for awhile. The other, a movie based on a best selling video game franchise starring a rising Angelina Jolie that would go on to be the most profitable video game movie of its decade, earning more than its sequel, the Cradle of Life, and would rekindle interest in the games, forcing a reboot of the same name to critical acclaim and an upcoming new version of said story coming out in march of next year. That movie, of course, is Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This movie has it all, guns, boobs, action, humor reminiscent of indiana jones, and a killer soundtrack. I first saw it in the theaters having not beaten any of those games and was amazed by how well done they did this movie even though there have been failed attempts to bring classic video game movies to life (i'm looking at you warcraft!!!).
Tweekums Lady Lara Croft might sound like a prim and proper member of the English upper class but we soon see that she is far from that as she enters what appears to be an ancient tomb and ends up battling a robot… while wearing short shorts and a tee shirt that shows of her ample assets! This is just a training sequence to give us an idea what she can do. It turns out that a once in five thousand year planetary alignment is about to happen and a sinister organisation is desperate to get their hands on 'the key' which will enable then to get their hands on the two pieces of an ancient artefact that will allow them to control time itself. It turns out that Lara's late father found the key some time earlier and placed it in her country house. She finds it when it starts ticking and starts trying to find out what it is. This leads her to Manfred Powell who wants the key for himself and soon steals it with the help of a small army of mercenaries. If Lara is to stop him getting his hands on the device she will have to follow him to a temple in Cambodia, Venice then finally to a remote corner of Siberia. If you are looking for something serious you will be a bit disappointed but if you want some good silly fun with plenty of action you could do a lot worse. The story is simple enough with no real surprises but it is told fairly well. Often in this sort of film there is a bit too much forced humour but thankfully this is played fairly straight. There is lots of action and this is rather good; given the films age the CGI still looks pretty decent. Angelina Jolie does an impressive job as our eponymous heroine; it isn't surprising that she went on to play more action leads. The rest of the cast is pretty solid too; notably Daniel Craig and Iain Glen. Having never played the video games I can't say how the character or story compares… possibly an advantage as I had no idea what Lara Croft 'should' be like. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to anybody wanting an hour and a half of silly action with little content that could be considered offensive.
Python Hyena Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001): Dir: Simon West / Cast: Angelina Jolie, Noah Taylor, Jon Voight, Daniel Craig, Richard Johnson: Based on a popular video game providing viewers with stunts and special effects with as little story as possible. Perhaps the producers raided a tomb to find this screenplay without realizing that a plot this dumb was buried for a good reason. Angelina Jolie plays Lara Croft who begins the film with one of many mindless action scenes. She finds a clock that contains a strange object. She is then off to obtain two halves of a triangle that are located at opposite ends of the earth. She must destroy them before they are used to control time. This is apparently done when the planets are aligned together. Director Simon West hasn't the slightest idea what he's doing with this big budget circus act. To his credit he at least takes on projects of different genres. Aside from this he directed the suspenseful The General's Daughter and the embarrassing action crap fest Con Air. Jolie spends much time in bemused combat. Jon Voight provides the only real character as her father, and their scene together is perhaps the one good scene. Noah Taylor and Daniel Craig are at the mercy of cardboard material. Richard Johnson plays someone billed as the Distinguished Gentlemen. The only thing distinguished here is a bad career move. Pointless video game spectacle should be buried in a tomb. Score: 1 ½ / 10
