This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

The film will not exactly win any awards for the screenplay or acting, but it is nevertheless entertaining enough with a blend of wonderful action and adventure. More realistic than the first installment with awesome scenery. The film is unfortunately way too silly at times as they try to recreate the wittiness of the first film but it simply falls flat. I must admit, as stupid as the scene was where Lara Croft punches a Great White on the nose, it had me crying with laughter (at just how silly it was!) The film does become wonderfully creepy towards the end, compensating for the silly humor earlier in the film.

Movie Review: "Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" (2003)Losing 50 percent of its domestic box office attendance in Summer 2003, the succession to a highly, yet expensive 115-Million-Dollar videogame adaptation from 2001 "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" starring Angelina Jolie as martial arts as trained with two-gun-firing heroine directed by Simon West, comes here the cinematographer-turned-director directed sequel by Jan De Bont, known for a fulminate lucky strike debut in directing high-concept action-movie "Speed" (1994) starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, which former well-paced as organic action ingredients can hardly be translated in overly-down sequences of action with a capable supporting cast surrounding Gerard Butler as double-vision Terry Sheridan, Ciarán Hinds as "Pandora's Box" seeking nemesis character and actor Djimon Hounsou utterly exploited as Native African tribe-member Kosa, when "The Cradle of Life" just denies itself a decent showdown scenario, where cheaply-animated guardian-monsters attack under constant unnaturally flashing light-strikes of thunder initiated by unless competent cinematographer David Tattersall in all-too fake because on an obvious sound-stage-designed fountain of underwater gold-shimmerings with the seemingly hidden spot of the supplementary title-given treasure to let the first "Lara Croft" movie of successful Summer 2001 surprisingly shine in comparison.© 2018 Felix Alexander Dausend

After an earthquake in Greece treasure hunters are searching the sea bed to see what they can find. These include Lara Croft but she believes the others are looking in the long place. She is convinced that the Luna Temple where Alexander the Great hid his greatest treasures is nearby and sure enough she finds it. Once inside she discovers a mysterious orb but before she can remove it the villain Chen Lo turns up, kills her companions and takes the orb. After being rescued she is approached by members of MI6 who want her to recover the orb. It turns out that it contains directions to the Cradle of Life where Pandora's Box of Greek mythology is believed to have been hidden. They state that Jonathan Reiss, a Nobel Prize winning scientist who has become a bio-terrorist is also after the box because it contains a virus for which there is no cure. Lara accepts the challenge but insists that that former colleague/lover Terry Sheridan is released from prison as he is the only person she knows who can get her close to Chen Lo. Their adventure will take them to Mainland China and Hong Kong before they finally discover the Cradle of Life in East Africa. When I watched the first Lara Croft movie I didn't expect it to be that good but found myself rather enjoying it; enough to give this sequel a go. I'm glad I did as it is at least as much fun as the original. The story is of course a bit silly but that doesn't matter; it is fun and provides lots of exciting action. This includes plenty of fights and shootouts, CGI monsters and an impressive wing-suit jump from a Hong Kong skyscraper. Angelina Jolie does an impressive job as Lara Croft, making the highly unlikely seem believable
she also looks great in costumes designed to show her off to her best! Ciarán Hinds also impresses as the villainous Jonathan Reiss, thankfully he plays the character straight rather than as a pantomime villain. Gerard Butler is solid enough as Sheridan but the character isn't as interesting as he could be. The special effects are pretty good even if it is fairly obvious that most of them are CGI. Overall I'd recommend this to anybody who enjoyed the first film or just wants a solid action film with a few fantasy elements.

Even Roger Ebert (in 2004) agrees that not everyone can play Laura Croft. Angelina Jolie is perfect for the part. Not only does she do some of her own stunts, she has that impossibly fit and perfect body to do so. (Sigh) Now the movie, once again, raids no tombs. Here she is after Pandora's Box, accompanied by "Terry Sheridan" a former British Secret Agent now in prison, and her former "lover". He is pardoned to assist her in her quest, and he desires "the box", as do several other nefarious and evil types, including a greedy "mad scientist". Quite an involved story that ends up in Africa, after searching for the "map key" (a glowing sphere) and endless chases all over-the-place, including Hong Kong. Much graphic violence with guns, AK-47's, knifes and swords. Only a beheading is missing. Bad guys are gobbled up by man-eating tree roots (or something). The first half has spellbinding EFX, including dives out of aircraft and impossible leaps from high places. For some stupid reason, the greedy treasure hunters believe that they can control Pandora's Box and sell it for profit. (Silly mortals) Is the box from the Greek Gods or Outer Space? It is found in a pool of acid, not water, as a goddess wept for it. Unleashing it's power has happened before, and it is responsible for several plagues throughout history. Spoiler: Laura throws "Dr. Evil" in the acidic water and he "melts". She shoots Terry to prevent him from stealing and opening The Box. As Laura says, "Not all treasures are meant to be found". A truly sad ending.
